Mikkelsen thrilled to return to Ireland

Intercontinental Rally Challenge series leader Andreas Mikkelsen is aiming to become only the second ever foreign winner of the Circuit of Ireland when he leads crews into the start of the event on Friday afternoon. The organisers of the event are putting the finishing touches to what should be a sell-out spectator stage in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter – and Mikkelsen and his Skoda UK Motorsport Fabia S2000 will be first into the test. Mikkelsen leads the IRC series by 18 points after just two rounds and is looking forward to his return to Irish rallying

Mikkelsen: Floene illness no problem

Andreas Mikkelsen says switching co-drivers for his pre-Circuit of Ireland Rally test on Monday has not affected his preparations for round three of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge this week. Juho Hanninen’s co-driver Mikko Markkula accompanied Mikkelsen during the test south of Aughnacloy in Ireland after his regular navigator Ola Floene delayed his departure from his native Norway to recover from a bout of ‘flu. Mikkelsen and Markkula used a 2.8-kilometre test road and covered 165 kilometres during their test, which started in wet conditions but finished in the dry

Kopecky wins in dramatic finish

Jan Kopecky picked up a last-gasp Rally Islas Canarias win when rival Andreas Mikkelsen’s Skoda UK Fabia developed a misfire on the very last stage. Mikkelsen appeared to have done enough to win his event-long battle with fellow works Skoda driver Kopecky, taking a 3.6-second lead into the final stage despite his Czech sparring partner being fractionally quicker on the deciding afternoon. But the misfire cost Mikkelsen nearly half a minute, robbing him of what would have been his first victory on asphalt, and halting his streak of Intercontinental Rally Challenge wins

Andreas Mikkelsen wasted no time in retaking the lead of Rally Islas Canarias as round two of the 2012 Intercontinental Rally Challenge began its final day. The Skoda UK driver had led through Friday before deliberately dropping behind rival Jan Kopecky (Skoda) on the final leg one stage to try and get a psychological advantage – saying he “would rather hunt than be hunted”

Kopecky leads at end of day one

Jan Kopecky will lead Rally Islas Canarias into the final day after Andreas Mikkelsen backed off to fall behind his rival on the last of Friday’s stages. Championship leader Mikkelsen had hung on in front despite a quick off-road moment on stage seven, but decided he would prefer to let factory Skoda driver Kopecky run first on the road on Saturday’s deciding stages, so took the concluding Gran Canaria go-kart track stage steadily

Mikkelsen keeps Kopecky at bay

Andreas Mikkelsen responded to a charge from Jan Kopecky to maintain his lead heading for the second service break on Rally Islas Canarias. After Mikkelsen had edged away from fellow Skoda driver Kopecky on this morning’s first loop, the Czech driver fought back with two fastest times at the start of the second group of stages, getting the gap down to just 1.6 seconds. But then Mikkelsen retaliated on the Tejeda stage, where he was quickest by 3.5s, restoring his advantage to 5.1s overall

Andreas Mikkelsen opened up a narrow lead over Jan Kopecky during the first three stages of Rally Islas Canarias – round two of the 2012 Intercontinental Rally Challenge. Although Mikkelsen (Skoda UK) had been sceptical about his chances of taking a fourth straight IRC victory as he has never won on asphalt so far, he was fractionally quickest on every stage so far this morning and pulled out a 3.6-second lead over Skoda Motorsport’s Kopecky.

Andreas Mikkelsen will take a 16.2-second lead into the final day of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge season-opener in the Azores after heavy rain led to the Friday afternoon stages being truncated. Stage eight Coroa da Mata was cancelled outright and stage nine Sao Bras to Vila Franca reduced from 16 to six kilometres. Skoda UK driver Mikkelsen still managed to extend his lead over works rival Juho Hanninen by 0.8s in the brief stage mileage that took place

Andreas Mikkelsen extended his lead over Juho Hanninen through the first four stages of day two of Rally Azores. There was little to choose between the two Skoda drivers until Hanninen had a quick spin near the end of SS5, losing 10 seconds. Mikkelsen then stretched his advantage on the next stage, and although Hanninen won SS7, he only took a tenth off the reigning Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion and the gap between them now stands at 15.4s.
