Mikkelsen wins rally and IRC title
November 5th, 2011
Skoda UK driver Andreas Mikkelsen clinched the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge title with a commanding victory in the double points finale in Cyprus. Mikkelsen escaped a late scare when he picked up a rear puncture on the opening stage of the final loop – but with title rival Jan Kopecky getting a front puncture on the same rock and losing even more time, Mikkelsen’s lead was not in jeopardy. It could have been a different story had Nasser Al-Attiyah still held second place, but an engine issue on his Autotek Ford prevented the Dakar winner from leaving the midday service, taking any remaining pressure off the leader.

Andreas Mikkelsen is now in prime position to claim the Intercontinental Rally Challenge title, having taken the lead in Cyprus as main rival Thierry Neuville retired from leg one. Crash ends Hanninen’s IRC title bid
November 4th, 2011
Juho Hanninen’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge title defence has ended after the 2010 champion crashed out of the 2011 decider on the first full-length stage in Cyprus. Hanninen went into the season finale six points behind Skoda team-mate and championship leader Jan Kopecky, having only contested a partial campaign this year while focusing on the S2000 World Rally Championship, which he clinched in Spain last month. The following Thierry Neuville said Hanninen had gone off very early on the Koilinia stage and was too far off the road to rejoin.

Volvo weight increase for China
November 2nd, 2011
The Volvo C30 has had 20kg added to its base weight for this weekend’s World Touring Car Championship round at Tianma. Robert Dahlgren’s fastest lap for the Polestar Racing-run car at Suzuka last time out means that the C30 has been made heavier under the compensation weight rules, designed to balance the performance of the field. The championship-leading Chevrolet Cruze remains the reference car and stays at +40kg for China while the BMW 320TC is level with the Volvo on +20kg and the SEAT Leon 1.6T runs at +10kg
