January 25th, 2012

Latvala puts Monte crash behind him
January 24th, 2012
Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala says he has put his Monte Carlo Rally shunt behind already, with his focus now firmly fixed on next month’s Rally Sweden. Latvala crashed out of the lead of last week’s Monte Carlo Rally and was the big loser from the WRC opener, picking up no points because of the event organiser’s decision not to run the re-entry regulations known as Rally 2. He has vowed to move on, however, and focus entirely on the next event in Sweden
Rankings: Latvala counts cost of crash
January 23rd, 2012
Jari-Matti Latvala tumbled down the Castrol EDGE Rankings after rolling out from the lead of the WRC’s Monte Carlo opener.
Ford team boss praises Solberg
January 23rd, 2012
Ford team principal Malcolm Wilson has praised his driver Petter Solberg’s efforts in delivering a Monte Carlo Rally podium on the Norwegian’s debut in a Fiesta RS WRC. Solberg returned to Ford during the closed season, coming back for the first time since he left for Subaru almost 12 years ago. Wilson said Solberg’s performance and world champion pedigree shone through, despite limited testing ahead of the opening World Rally Championship round of the season.
Monaco base discussed for ‘Monte’
January 23rd, 2012
The organisers of the Monte Carlo Rally are under pressure to implement significant changes to the route for next year’s event, including a wholesale move back to Monaco. Last week’s World Rally Championship opener spent four of its six days (including shakedown) in Valence before a long road section down to the principality for the final two days
Solberg gets suspended ban
January 22nd, 2012
Petter Solberg has been given a suspended ban from Rally Sweden after being caught speeding on a road section during the Monte Carlo Rally last night. The Ford driver, who finished third in the event, was caught doing 106km/h in a 50km/h limit at 21.10 local time on Saturday, following the final stage of leg four.
Loeb claims Monte Carlo victory
January 22nd, 2012
Sebastien Loeb started 2012 in the perfect fashion by clinching a dominant victory in the World Rally Championship’s Monte Carlo opener. The reigning champion looked like he might have a fight on his hands when likely title rival Jari-Matti Latvala used a brilliant tyre choice amid changeable weather on day one to shoot into a half-minute lead. But when Latvala rolled his Ford out of first place late on Wednesday, Loeb’s Citroen was left alone at the front of the field, and he duly pulled away to claim a crushing sixth Monte Carlo win
Loeb on cusp of Monte Carlo win
January 21st, 2012
Sebastien Loeb looks assured of a sixth Monte Carlo Rally victory and a perfect start to the 2012 World Rally Championship after retaining his lead through the Saturday night stages. Only Sunday morning’s five-kilometre power stage now stands between Loeb and the rally win, with the Citroen driver holding a 2m41.6s advantage after a serene run this evening.

January 21st, 2012
Sebastien Loeb continues to lead the Monte Carlo Rally, while Petter Solberg has begun catching Dani Sordo for second. Loeb pulls away as Hirvonen flies
January 20th, 2012
Sebastien Loeb continues to lead the Monte Carlo Rally after the penultimate full day, while a second straight stage win for his new Citroen team-mate Mikko Hirvonen brought the Finn closer to Petter Solberg’s third place. This afternoon’s action consisted of just the 29-kilometre SS13, after which the field will head down from the World Rally Championship opener’s initial base in Valence to Monte Carlo itself, ready for Saturday’s afternoon and evening stages, and Sunday’s power stage. Loeb drove relatively conservatively through this afternoon’s stage, still stretching his lead just a little to complete the leg with a 2m12.4s advantage over Dani Sordo’s Mini in second place.
Ogier’s co-driver ‘fit for Sweden’
January 20th, 2012
Sebastien Ogier’s co-driver Julien Ingrassia will be fit for Rally Sweden despite injuring his arm in a high-speed crash on the Monte Carlo Rally. The French duo were providing one of the shocks of the rally, as Ogier ran as high as fourth in his Volkswagen-run Super 2000 Skoda Fabia. But that impressive run came to an end with a big crash on Thursday, in which Ingrassia suffered the injuries as the car hit a tree on his side.
Todt: WRC promoter solution close
January 20th, 2012
The World Rally Championship promoter saga is very likely to be resolved before the next round in Sweden, according to FIA president Jean Todt. This weekend’s season opening Monte Carlo Rally is taking place without the WRC having a promoter in place, following the collapse of the deal with former promoter North One Sport.
FIA rules out WRC/IRC merger
January 20th, 2012
FIA president Jean Todt says the possibility of Eurosport becoming the World Rally Championship promoter will not lead to a merger between the series and the Eurosport-owned Intercontinental Rally Challenge. The prospect of greater collaboration or a full-scale merger between the WRC and IRC has been mooted for several years, and with Eurosport favourite to take on the WRC promoting role, there was speculation that an agreement between the championships would move closer
Todt wants superally abolished
January 20th, 2012
The future for the World Rally Championship’s controversial superally regulation has been called into question by FIA president Jean Todt. This week’s Monte Carlo Rally is the first event since 2004 to be running without the regulation, now called Rally 2, which allows crews who have retired to return to the rally on the following day with the possibility of still scoring points.
Monte admits long event a mistake
January 20th, 2012
Next year’s Monte Carlo Rally is expected to return to a shorter format after a disappointing level of entries for this week’s World Rally Championship opener. Commissioner general of the Automobile Club de Monaco Michel Ferry admitted the six-day format of the event, which is returning to the WRC for the first time since 2008, was too much
Q and A: Todt on the WRC’s future
January 20th, 2012
FIA president Jean Todt met with the World Rally Championship media in Valence this morning to discuss the current promoter crisis in the series. The championship started its 2012 sesaon without a confirmed promoter or guaranteed television coverage after North One Sport’s contract was terminated following partner company Convers Sports Initiatives’ collapse into administration. Amid fears that the situation can set the sport back massively, Todt took time to give a lengthy press conference to address both the present crisis and the WRC’s longer-term future

January 19th, 2012
Sebastien Loeb made a fitting start to his bid for a ninth World Rally crown by dominating from the front on the second day of Monte Carlo. The Frenchman had trailed Ford’s Jari-Matti Latvala after the second stage of the event, only for the Finn to crash out of the rally on the final stage of day one – ending the prospect of a grandstand fight between the pair
