Monte’s WRC return gets 89 entries

The Automobile Club de Monaco has released an 89-strong entry list for next month’s Rallye Monte-Carlo, the opening round of the World Rally Championship. The list boasts 15 World Rally Car entries, including Mikko Hirvonen in a Citroen Total World Rally Team DS3 WRC for the first time and Petter Solberg’s Ford World Rally Team return with Britain’s Chris Patterson alongside
2012 Rally Argentina to top 300 miles

Rally Argentina organisers have issued the longest World Rally Championship route in recent history for the 2012 event. The route for the classic South American rally was one of the talking points of this season, with the event putting itself forward as a test case for the return of the endurance style event favoured by FIA president Jean Todt. The organisers haven’t been entirely revolutionary, however.
Hirvonen in emotional M-Sport farewell

World Rally Championship runner-up Mikko Hirvonen has talked of an emotional visit to M-Sport earlier this week, when he went to say goodbye to his former team. Hirvonen flew to Britain earlier this week to pay tribute to the Ford and M-Sport, with whom he finished runner-up to Sebastien Loeb in this year’s championship. The Finn subsequently announced he would be joining his long-term rival at Citroen, and has already tested the DS3 WRC which he will drive from next month onwards.
Meeke to miss out on Monte Carlo

British World Rally Championship star Kris Meeke will not contest the Monte Carlo Rally next month, following Mini’s decision to only run one of its two factory drivers on every 2012 round. Meeke has been told of the team’s decision not to enter him on the Valence-based season-opener, but the Northern Irishman was out of contact when AUTOSPORT tried to reach him. AUTOSPORT’S sources have confirmed that while Meeke won’t compete on every world championship round in 2012, he remains part of the Mini World Rally Team
Proton to enter SWRC next year

Proton will enter next year’s Super 2000 World Rally Championship, starting its programme with P-G Andersson and Giandomenico Basso driving on the Monte Carlo Rally. In addition to its maiden SWRC entry, the Malaysian firm has also confirmed it will defend its multiple Asia-Pacific Rally Championship titles with Andersson and APRC champion driver Alister McRae.
Paddon switches to S2000 for 2012

Mini misses 2012 WRC deadline

Mini has missed the deadline to sign up for next year’s World Rally Championship, which closed last night. Officials from the Banbury-based team are currently in negotiations with BMW in Munich and the FIA as they seek a possible extension to the deadline. While there is no immediate concern over the future of the John Cooper Works WRC programme, there are reportedly significant issues which need to be resolved in the Anglo-German relationship
Citroen gives Neuville WRC chance

Citroen will bring Intercontinental Rally Challenge stand-out Thierry Neuville into the World Rally Championship next season. The 22-year-old Belgian will drive a Citroen Racing Technologies-prepared DS3 WRC in at least nine rounds of the 2012 WRC, alongside regular co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul. Neuville is confirmed for every round except New Zealand and Italy, with his presence in France and Spain provisional depending on how the first half of the season progresses.

Al-Attiyah secures works Citroen drive

Citroen has confirmed it will field a third DS3 World Rally Car for Nasser Al-Attiyah from the second round of next year’s World Rally Championship. The seven-time Middle East Rally Champion will drive a Qatar-backed Citroen in exactly the same specification as that of eight-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb and his new Finnish team-mate Mikko Hirvonen. Ford: New deal shows WRC’s strength

Ford’s commitment to the World Rally Championship should be taken as an indication of the series’ solid future, according to team principal Malcolm Wilson. As the WRC’s commercial arm North One Sport fights for its survival – after parent company Convers Sports Initiatives went into administration – Ford’s decision to commit to the championship confirms the future of the WRC.

Ford has ended speculation surrounding its short-term participation in the World Rally Championship by confirming its presence until at least the end of 2013. Petter Solberg will test a Ford Fiesta RS WRC for the first time on Thursday with a view to joining the team as its second driver in 2012. Solberg outlined his plans to AUTOSPORT during Rally GB last month and the details of the test were further discussed with Ford team principal Malcolm Wilson in London just prior to the AUTOSPORT Awards last week. Solberg hasn’t driven for Wilson’s factory squad since 2000, when he departed the Cumbrian-based team mid-season for Subaru
FIA to allow safer tyre compound

The World Motor Sport Council has confirmed WRC events can include a safer compound of tyre to be introduced from next year, following calls from the drivers. There was outcry from the drivers on Rally Australia earlier this year, when heavy rain on the opening day made it difficult to find grip from the hard compound Michelin tyres the factory cars were forced to use. The drivers called into question the safety of driving in such conditions as called on the FIA to implement a rule to allow an allocation of rubber which would be more suited to the unexpected conditions.
FIA committed to securing WRC future

The FIA has said it is working on an “immediate plan” to make sure the 2012 World Rally Championship goes ahead as planned following the news that CSI has gone into administration. Convers Sports Initiatives, the parent company of the World Rally Championship’s commercial rights holder North One, went into receivership last month. Sebastien Ogier says he does not regret anything about how his sole World Rally Championship season as a works Citroen driver turned out. Promoted from the Citroen Junior team to a full-time factory seat for 2011, Ogier was a title contender for much of the year but also fell out with Citroen and champion team-mate Sebastien Loeb in rows over team orders.
Ogier to make VW debut at RoC

Sebastien Ogier will give the Volkswagen Polo R WRC its world debut at the Race of Champions on Saturday night. The Frenchman is scheduled to begin serious testing of an interim version of the car in the near future, with VW yet to decide upon its final specification of the machine until further running has been completed.
Convers goes into Administration

The World Rally Championship’s commercial rights holder, Convers Sports Initiatives, has gone into administration. One of CSI’s major backers, Vladimir Antonov, was arrested in London last Friday and questioned in connection with an investigation into the asset-stripping of Bankas Snoras, a bank that he was a 68 per cent shareholder in. Antonov, who was later bailed, denies any wrongdoing.
Franchitti joins Burns Foundation
