Rally Sweden secures TV deal

The organisers of this week’s Rally Sweden have confirmed there will be international television coverage of the event. Event CEO Glenn Olsson concluded a deal on Tuesday afternoon to ensure that the second round of the World Rally Championship will be filmed with footage available across the world. Motors TV is expected to screen the footage in the UK, with nightly reports and a round-up on Sunday afternoon.

Svenska Rally AB, the organising company, has established a deadline of midday Tuesday to conclude deals to show footage from the Karlstad-based event.
Hirvonen encouraged by warm-up win

Mikko Hirvonen says his victory on yesterday’s Rally Finnskog has confirmed he is taking the Citroen DS3 WRC in the right direction ahead of this week’s Rally Sweden. The Finn starts the second round of the World Rally Championship chasing a third straight Rally Sweden win and his success on the one-day round of the Norwegian series has boosted his confidence. He took a half-minute win over Henning Solberg’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI.
Injured Wilson to miss Sweden

Matthew Wilson has been ruled out of Rally Sweden after breaking his left ankle in a fall while training on Saturday. The Briton fell awkwardly during a run in England’s Lake District and was taken to hospital. “It looks as though I’ve broken and dislocated my left ankle so, unfortunately, that means no Rally Sweden for me,” said Wilson, who had started the season with a tough run to 11th in Monte Carlo

Negotiations between the FIA and Eurosport for the promotion of the World Rally Championship have broken down and international television coverage of next week’s Rally Sweden appears unlikely. The FIA issued a statement this evening confirming it has withdrawn from negotiations and will begin discussions with other interested parties.

Solberg aims for home advantage boost

Ford driver Petter Solberg will be hoping to make his home advantage count on next week’s Rally Sweden – which passes the border into Norway and goes right past his front door. Solberg, who returned to the official Ford team this season, is delighted with the decision from the Rally Sweden organisers to spend one of the three days competing in neighbouring Norway. Citroen driver Mikko Hirvonen says the French firm’s DS3 WRC is strong enough to end his former team Ford’s stronghold on next week’s Rally Sweden. Hirvonen has won the last two Karlstad-based events in a Ford and you have to go back to Petter Solberg’s Subaru success in 2005 for the last time it wasn’t one of the British-built World Rally Cars on the top step of the podium. WRC Academy to continue for 2012

The FIA has confirmed the World Rally Championship Academy Cup will go ahead as planned this season – with M-Sport offering a full 2013 WRC season as a prize to the winner. There had been concerns for the WRC’s support series following the loss of promoter North One Sport earlier this month, but the governing body has confirmed a six-round Academy will begin on the Rally of Portugal in March.
