Ferrari braced for battle to the wire

Ferrari is bracing itself for the world title fight to go to the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, even though Fernando Alonso could clinch his third world championship crown in the next race in Brazil.
Alonso holds an 11-point advantage over Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber heading into the Interlagos event – and a podium finish would be enough for him to take the title if his main rivals do not score.
However, Ferrari is under no illusions about how tough the situation still is – especially because Red Bull Racing’s single-lap form continues to show it is the team to beat.
Speaking after Alonso’s win about the challenge of beating Red Bull Racing, Domenicali said: “I am a pragmatic guy. If they were able to do 15 pole positions in 17 races, then it is something. So they have a fantastic car.
“But for me the most important thing is that, despite this fantastic [Red Bull] car, we are there, fighting, and we will fight up until the last corner of the last race.
“This is something that has to be considered because it is a reward for the team that we are still there and with the right approach, even if we know the competition is very strong. We know that in the last two races that we cannot lose any kind of opportunity.”
Even though Alonso has seized the initiative in the title chase, Ferrari has reiterated that it will stay as calm as it did in the early summer, when its championship challenge appeared to falling off the rails.
“We don’t change our approach,” said Domenicali. “We said in Suzuka that at every race we need to be on the podium and win one race, we have won one race and now we need to keep going without any calculation and try and be focused. Then with the numbers we will see afterwards.”
And although Alonso can win the drivers’ title in Brazil, Domenicali says there is no doubt that the title fight is going to Abu Dhabi because success in that contest will leave the constructors’ battle still open.
“We have two championships to fight for and for sure in Brazil we cannot win the second one,” he said. “We want to go ahead, keeping the feet on the ground.”
