Ganassi Pair Secure Grand Am Championship
August 28th, 2010
MONTREAL, Quebec — Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas collected their series-record eighth Grand Am Rolex Series Daytona Prototype victory at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve Saturday while wrapping up their third series championship.
The Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabats duo were dominant once again aboard their No. 01 BMW Riley. Pruett took the lead for good on lap 28, overtaking the SunTrust Ford Dallara shared by Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor to secure the victory.
“The car was really good,” Pruett said. “The car was fabulous. I mean absolutely fantastic. This was a big race for us to win. We did it. Awesome.
“It’s so great working for Chip Ganassi and the whole organization, Telmex, BMW, I mean everybody, especially with Chip being so embracing. It’s all about the winning. I can’t tell you, it couldn’t be any sweeter,” Pruett said.
The Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet Riley shared by Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty started from the pole, with Fogarty leading 22 of the first 27 laps. He gave up the seat of the car to Gurney, who finished 2.005 seconds behind Pruett at the finish.
Angelelli and Taylor completed the Daytona Prototype podium.
In the GT class Paul Edwards, driving the No. 07 Banner Racing Corvette, made a daring late-race pass to overtake both Stevenson Motorsports Camaros to earn the first GT victory of the season for he and teammate Scott Russell.
With less than six minutes left Robin Liddell led his teammate Ronnie Bremer and Edwards when Edwards made a three-wide move coming down the frontstretch, taking the lead through the first series of turns.
“Today we put it all together,” said Edwards. “It was gonna be tough to get around the Camaros. The Camaros were super quick today. It was pretty even between the Corvettes and the Camaros, but luck was on our side today.”
Breamer was able to hold on and finish second for he and co-driver Gunter Schaldach. Teammates Liddell and Andrew Davis were third in the GT class.
