Schumi’s Second Coming Headlines 2010 Opener
March 9th, 2010
Michael Schumacher, one of the most successful drivers in the history of the sport, is making his return to Formula One this season after three years in retirement. If the 41-year-old Schumacher will be able to regain his former glory is just one of the many fascinating plots in the upcoming F-1 season that kicks off in Bahrain on March 14.
Schumacher, who quit Ferrari after a 14-year relationship to join Mercedes, will be going up against reigning world champion Jenson Button, who has joined 2008 title winner Lewis Hamilton at McLaren.
Joining the fray are Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa at Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber at Red Bull, Schumacher’s teammate Nico Rosberg and the rest of the lineup.
Meanwhile, the Lotus brand returns to F-1 for the first time since 1994. Joining Lotus as new entries on the grid will be Virgin and HRT.
On the rules front, the biggest change this season is that no refueling will be allowed during the race.
“There are a whole lot of new nuances that will come from no refueling and will make F-1 just as interesting as before,” says Mercedes team principal and F-1 technical guru Ross Brawn.
There has also been considerable movement on the team and driver fronts. Below is a thumbnail guide charting the changes between the last race in 2009 and the first grand prix of 2010.
