Across the Pond
by Christopher Leone on April 23rd, 2011
The inRacingNews Challenge took its penultimate round across the pond, spending this past week on the International layout of the famed Silverstone Circuit. Week 11 of 12 marked the online racing series’ third and final visit to the track, after the Pontiac Solstices and SpecRacer Fords took on the National layout in Week Four and Southern layout in Week Eight.
With only one week left in the championship, it’s safe to say that most of the divisional championships are pretty well set, while season-long favorites Chris Hughson (Solstice) and Gabriel Tobar (Ford) should go home with the championships in their respective classes. Both celebrated with class-pacing weeks – Tobar scoring 169 points after leading all 14 laps of his lone race victory and Hughson taking home a magnificent 209 by winning one of his two starts and scoring poles both times he entered.
Neither were the big winners on the week in those respective classes, though. Wim Bries and Rookie driver Ralf Janiak took four wins apiece to pace Solstice drivers, while Hughson’s valiant effort to chase both class championships continued with 13 wins in SRF. This week’s SRF races featured incredible parity, as only two other drivers, David Buhlinger and Juergen Klaiber, took more than one win. Six drivers took multiple wins in Solstice, and each class featured 19 winners in Week 11.
The goal of the top SRF drivers all week was to break a lap time of one minute, 35 seconds, something only two drivers were able to accomplish during qualifying – Henri Salminen (1:34.944) and Tobar (1:34.986), who scored one pole apiece. Not even Tobar, with his perfect score of 800 points in the time trial standings, could manage the feat in his best run; however, he took the week’s win with a lap of 1:35.496.
The fastest Solstice qualifying time of the week went to Alessandro Fior, whose lap of 1:37.943 made him the only driver able to break the one minute, 38 second mark. Unsurprisingly, Fior scored poles in each of his seven starts, tops in the class for the week. Meanwhile, Janiak turned the fastest lap in Solstice time trials, with a 1:38.343, edging-out Tobar by just under four tenths of a second. Janiak had six poles to his credit on the week, and even set a world record for the class and layout with a 1:37.843.
Week 12, the final week of the season, will see the iRNC return to its de facto home track at Summit Point Raceway, for a 14-lap feature on its main circuit. Look for Tobar and Hughson to wrap up their championships with strong runs to close out dominant seasons.
