Fixed series are a nice option to have, for the reasons pointed out. But, we all have our different interests, and different features that ultimately make us want to drop the coin for the software. For some it's simply hitting the track and racing, for others, like myself being able to tweak and dial in your car is just as important (and fun) as the actual racing is. So, it's nice to have both I think and I wouldn't say that either is a better option than the other.
