Miles ahead in England Championship
by Tony Rickard on August 31st, 2010
A win in the Mustang at Virginia International Raceway and a third at Zandvoort Club in the Skip Barber have given the lead to Adam Miles in the England Club Road Championship after four rounds of online racing. Previous championship leader, Steven Jones, saw his 100% win record in tatters after a lowly ninth at VIR as the result of an early incident.
Richard Towler took some time off the serious business of both NASCAR iRacing Series World Championship and iRacing World Championship Road Racing series to join in some fun. Starting from the back of the grid, he worked his way all the way up to second, less than ten seconds behind Miles at the flag. A solid run from Fabio Martins completed the podium with another consistent runner, Tony Rickard in fourth. Andy Kirschetorte had shown some early pace but a midrace spin dropped him back to fifth.
On to Zandvoort with Skip Barber F2000 cars where championship holder Blake Townend returned and took the win. Ten seconds down the road Sam Appleton, Adam Miles and Steven Jones were separated by less than two seconds.
“I got a decent start and managed to carry enough speed around the outside of Tarzan to get past Philip (Widdowson),” said Jones. “That put me on the tail of the lead trio. Sam and Adam had a little battle which I managed to take advantage of and slip inside Adam into Tarzan.
“Unfortunately, two corners later, I hit the kerb in the infield hairpin which spun the inside rear tyre up and (I) lost all my momentum. Adam wasted no time in getting back through. And there lay the story of my race – I threw away my first opportunity and I never got another one.”
Towler had a tougher job starting from 26th and managed to work his way up to fifth place ahead of Widdowson who had another strong run. Among Towler’s victims was Stephen Grier who had the misfortune of spinning out of seventh spot in the final turn on the last lap after a mistake free run!
The top ten after four rounds:
1 Adam Miles – 81
2 Steven Jones – 74
3 Blake Townend – 58
4 Fabio Martins – 44
5 Tony Rickard – 42
6 Richard Towler – 34
7 Philip Widdowson – 30
8 Sam Appleton – 20
9 Darren Turner – 20
10 Barry West – 19
The Club set off to Watkins Glen in the Mustangs for round five.
