NVIDIA Winners x 2
by David Phillips on May 6th, 2011
With the wrap-up of 2011 Season 1, two more iRacers — Alvaro Marcos of Spain and Ohio’s Andrew Trimbach — collected handsome prizes courtesy of NVIDIA.
Marcos scored a total of seven top fives, including five wins, to take the NVIDIA Cup title in Season 1c and the NVIDIA GTX 580 graphics card that goes with it. Marcos wheeled his Mazda MX5 to three online racing wins at Lime Rock Park and two more at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca en route to the title.
“iRacing is the first sim in which I raced against other people,” he explains. “I found that laser-scanned tracks make all the difference to others, and that’s why I stayed. As a rookie I obviously started with the MX5, which suits me and really enjoy to drive. As it’s easy to control, it has a very large amount of players. I think it is really good to race, lots of fun.”

Marcos may be camera shy, but there's no hiding from the fact he was a force to be reckoned with in NVIDIA Cup competition.
And although the NVIDIA Cup was broken down into three four week seasons (1a, 1b and 1c), Marcos also topped the points over the conventional 12 week 2011 Season 1 thanks to a fourth place finish in Season 1a and placing runner-up to Norbi Kiss in Season 1b before besting Jan Coomans, David Burns and Jason Stock in Season for the Season 1c crown.
“I didn’t really think I would be able to win the NVIDIA Cup any time, Marcos admits. “But I placed fourth I think in the first one, which I also used to learn a few tricks and change the gap to the quickest guys, so I realised I might have a chance and gave it a try. Unfortunately in the second season Norbi was too quick for me, but I managed to win this one, also against very fast guys so I’m very happy. It’s a pleasure to compete with all the people who take part in it. So, big thanks to NVIDIA and iRacing for everything. The 580 is a killer card!”

In contrast to Marcos, Trimbach only made occasional appearances in the NVIDIA Cup, focusing more on the inRacingNews Challenge, the Skip Barber and SK Modified Series. Although he didn’t win any of those championships, he faithfully raced with NVIDIA as his primary sponsor and, as a result, was chosen at random from the more than 1200 iRacers who ran the NVIDIA logo as their primary sponsor in at least 20 official races.
“I have used NVIDIA products and consider it the graphics industry standard,” he says. “I was excited to see the contest but knew my chances were low. The likelihood of finishing in the top three overall seemed a bit unobtainable — the competition here is pretty intense and humbling! But if I ran enough racing, I knew I might have a chance in a drawing; so I put the logo on every car I raced!”
Also in contrast to Marcos, Trimbach has iRacing – and its precursors – in his blood.
“A chance to race real people, rather than AI, drivers! Wow It’s great!” — Andrew Trimbach
“My sim Racing began, probably, like most of the persons on iRacing, with the first Papyrus Indy 500 simulation, then IndyCar Racing I and II,” he explains. “Then I went to console racing with the Playstation and the Gran Turismo franchise. Then this past December, I found out about iRacing! A chance to race real people, rather than AI, drivers! Wow It’s great! I’m slow, but having a great time! I love the real competition and excitement of iRacing! It is the most immersive racing sim I have ever used!”
If Trimbach thinks iRacing is immersive now, wait until he gets installs his prize package from NVIDIA – a 3D monitor and 3D glasses. It’s a package that could help him win Season 2a, 2b and/or 2c of the NVIDIA Cup. Or if he’s really lucky, Trimbach might be chosen at random again for some more NVIDIA gear . . . but only if he runs the NVIDIA logo as his primary sponsor in at least 20 races in Season 2.
