Riley Prototype Challenge Comes to inRacingNews
by Jason Lofing on April 16th, 2010
Here at inRacingNews we are proud to announce that we are expanding our weekly online race series coverage to include the Riley Prototype Challenge (RPC). The 500 horsepower car, better known as the Riley Mk XX Daytona Prototype is one of two Class A road cars in the iRacing service, meaning sim racers in the series should have plenty of seat time in lower divisions before strapping the belts on in the Riley.
As Contributing Editor of this weekly article, I will strive to bring the highest quality, complete coverage possible. Complete with race reviews, driver comments, points standings, and other odds and ends. These will start in full next week after Week Eleven racing at Indianapolis, but for now, an overview of the series and Season One, 2010 to date.

The Riley Mk XX is one of iRacing.com's two Class A road racing cars.
Season One, 2010 marks the fifth season of competition in the Riley Prototype challenge. The series, while not as popular as the lower divisions, the series still puts on an excellent show and features a tight points battle. In fact, some drivers actually prefer the small group of dedicated racers compared to a larger field. New England Club member Patrick Guerin explains, “It’s been a fun season having most of the same group together racing on the same day each week.” This gives the series championship a more real world feel, as there are not many chances to make up for a bad result as there are in more populated series. It also promotes cleaner racing and respect for all fellow drivers as everyone knows they are going to be dealing with the same competitors week after week.
The overall points standings through Week Seven are tight up front and the overall championship still is up for grabs. Segundo Martinez holds the overall lead through ten weeks of racing with 1247 markers to his name, 107 points up on Italian driver Mauro Bisceglie. Englishman Sam Michaels resides in third place ahead of James Nance (Virginias) with Sebastian Cron (DE-AT-CH) and Luca Ceretti tied for fifth at 1064 points apiece. Morgan Sowerby (West) checks-in with 1059 points with Carolina’s Jim Shedlick a dozen points back in eighth and Ales Simunek (International) and Bruce Snelson (Northwest) ninth and tenth respectively ahead of Mid-South’s Jason Elrod’s even 1000 point effort.
This week finds the RPC visting the historic confines of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with its 2.6 mile, 13 turn road course which, of course, utilizes Turn One and pit straightaway of the famed 2.5 mile oval. Martinez would appear secure in his series lead but it is Indianapolis after all, where strange things have been known to happen with the checkered flag virtually in sight.
