iRacers Go Three for Four in GRAND-AM
by David Phillips on March 8th, 2010

Jeff Segal co-drove the SpeedSource Mazda to the GT win at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday.
iRacers went three for four in last weekend’s Grand American Road Racing Series visit to Homestead-Miami Speedway. Jeff Segal (who joined iRacing in February) teamed with Emil Assentato to pilot the SpeedSource Mazda RX8 to victory in the GT class of the Grand Prix of Miami while, a little further back, Joey Hand drove the Turner Motorsport BMW M6 to sixth place in GT, together with co-drivers Bill Auberlen and Paul Della Lana.
Earlier, Hand teamed with Michael Marsal to finish third in the Continental Tires Challenge in their Turner Motorsport BMW M3 couple. Of course, the big news in Continental Tires Challenge was the fact that iRacer Jack Roush Jr. – together with co-driver Bill Johnson – scored the 400th victory in the history of Roush Motorsports at Homestead. Roush had put the Roush Ford Mustang on pole only to be sent to the back after technical inspection revealed an unapproved part on the car. Undeterred, Roush motored into the lead before handing-off to Johnson who brought the car home for the win.
What’s more, another iRacing member – Derek Whitis – teamed with Tom Long to drive the Freedom Autosport Mazda MX5 to the Continental Tires Challenge ST class win. Things didn’t go quite so well for the iRacing contingent in the Daytona Prototype class of Saturday’s Rolex GRAND-AM Series race. iRacer Alex Gurney came home third in the Gainsco Riley/Chevrolet he shared with Jon Fogarty, while Ryan Dalziel came home fifth, one better than fellow iRacer Ricky Taylor.
Up the road at Atlanta Motor Speedway, meanwhile, the Kobalt Tools 500 saw iRacer A.J. Allmendinger earn his best finish since last year’s Daytona 500, coming home sixth in the Richard Petty Motorsports Ford Fusion. Fellow iRacer Scott Speed was tenth, one better than Marcos Ambrose, while Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finished fifteenth and moved up two notches to thirteenth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings. On the other hand, iRacer Brad Keselowski saw his hopes of a top five finish demolished (along with his car) when he flipped after Carl Edwards intentionally “turned” him in the closing laps of the race. While Keselowski escaped injury, NASCAR official indicated they are reviewing the incident and will announce any penalties to Edwards on Tuesday.
