Allmendinger Staying With RPM
August 6th, 2010
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — A.J. Allmendinger has signed a multi-year contract extension to remain with Richard Petty Motorsports.
Allmendinger will continue to drive the No. 43 Ford for the team next season.
“I have to say that I’m pretty excited about moving into the next chapter of my career with Richard Petty Motorsports,” said Allmendinger. “There were several other good opportunities out there, but for the first time in my NASCAR career I have the chance to continue building on something good. I really think all of us on the 43 and at RPM can maximize that. We’re all pretty passionate about that.”
Allmendinger came to NASCAR after a short but successful stint in Indy car racing, which included five victories in 41 starts in the Champ Car World Series. He joined Red Bull Racing in 2007 and struggled, failing to qualify for 19 of the 36 races he attempted as a rookie in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Red Bull released the young California native late in the 2008 season in favor of former Formula One driver Scott Speed. Allmendinger made his first start with RPM, then known as Gillett Evernham Motorsports prior to its mergers with the Yates and Petty organizations, during the season-ending five-race stretch. He has been with the team since.
“We are very pleased to have A.J. as a part of the RPM family,” said team co-owner Richard Petty. “He has proven without a doubt that he is a very talented racer. His passion for the sport is second to none and his desire to be at the top is clear each and every week. I believe in him and what he can do and everyone at Richard Petty Motorsports is thrilled to be able to continue the relationship.”
Allmendinger has one top-five and 11 top-10 finishes to his credit, including a third-place finish during the 2009 Daytona 500.
The signing of Allmendinger couldn’t come at a better time for RPM, which has already lost Kasey Kahne to Hendrick Motorsports.
Elliott Sadler, driver of the No. 19 Ford for RPM, has stated publicly that he doesn’t expect to return to the team next season while rumors have the team’s fourth driver, Paul Menard, leaving to join Richard Childress Racing in 2011.
