Bad Stops Can’t Stop Harvick In Vegas
February 28th, 2010

LAS VEGAS — With everyone at Las Vegas Motor Speedway watching rain clouds and NASCAR newcomer Danica Patrick, Kevin Harvick overcame two costly pit stops to win Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series Sam’s Town 300.
Harvick, driving the Rheem Chevy, led the most laps (82) in adding this victory to the one he earned here in 2004. He survived two mid-race pit road errors, one for a jack problem and another for dropped lugnuts, to make his return visit to Las Vegas victory lane.
Harvick persevered to beat Denny Hamlin by 1.361 seconds after overtaking him during a late-race restart.
Harvick called the race, which began an hour and 35 minutes late because of rain, “good at the beginning and good at the end.”
He said, “Unless something crazy happened. Because our car was so good, everything played out right there at the end. It seemed like we were able to maneuver the traffic better than anybody. There at the end, I knew unless something crazy happened, I could run eight or 10 laps wide open. We had to kind of conserve, in case we had a caution or a restart or whatever the case may be.”
DeLana Harvick said the victory was a bit of a surprise.
“It didn’t start out as the best of days for us. But they didn’t give up. Kevin never gave up. It was a good testament (to) what you can do if you don’t give up,” she said.
“He passed more cars than anyone,” his crew chief, Ernie Cope, said. “We had our worst day on pit road. It started out great, and we stumbled bad on pit road. And we had a bad set of tires on our car, so everything that could go bad at once kind of went bad. Our car was good, and he drove his butt off.”
Meanwhile Patrick, who improved from her 37th-place start and briefly ran as high as third, had a frustrating end to her day. Her No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevy tangled with Michael McDowell’s Dodge in turn one on lap 86.
Running 25th at the time, Patrick hit the left rear of McDowell’s car, which had already been involved in a previous wreck.
“He was going slow. So I went to go underneath him as he drifted up to the wall. And he turned down … and took us both out,” Patrick said. “What are you going to do? It’s a real bummer.”
She said of her third stock-car race, “I learned for sure. We had a good car. We really did. Kevin Harvick was great, actually. Leading the race, he’s telling me to go up high with him. That was cool.
“Unfortunately we just got caught in a bad situation with a driver that wasn’t looking and a spotter that wasn’t calling,” Patrick said. “All in all, I was having fun out there. So it’s just a shame that we got taken out.”
McDowell apologized right away to Patrick and her JR Motorsports team, saying that he committed to a higher line and she, in turn, took the lower one.
“I sort of committed to it and she (went) to the bottom. I closed the door. It’s completely, 100 percent my fault,” McDowell said. “I take 100 percent responsibility. There wasn’t a whole lot of time to make a decision.”
Patrick will return to open-wheel racing, focusing on her Andretti Autosport day job with the IZOD IndyCar Series. She’ll resume her limited NASCAR Nationwide schedule June 26 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway at Loudon.
Pole sitter Brad Keselowski put his Discount Tire Dodge in fourth place. Brian Vickers was fifth in the Dollar General Toyota.
