STUART, Va. — Trevor Bayne will run at least 17 races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for the Wood Brothers Racing team in 2011.
Bayne, a 19-year-old rookie, will drive the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford in the first five races on the Sprint Cup schedule and select events after that. Veteran Donnie Wingo will return as crew chief.
“It’s pretty awesome that the Wood Brothers have the confidence in me to believe that I can do it as a rookie,” said Bayne, who will turn 20 on the day before the Daytona 500. “That says a lot about our relationship already. I’m looking forward to my first year in Cup. I know it’s not full time, but it’s been my dream since I was five years old.”
Bayne will run the minimum amount of races required to be eligible for the Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year Award, but at this point he has not announced any plans to compete for the honor.
“We’re really excited to be starting the season with Trevor,” said team co-owner Eddie Wood. “It’s something new for us. We had a good race at Texas last year. That’s where it all started.”
Bayne made his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut in 2009. He has since earned six top fives and 13 top 10s and no victories. He finished seventh in the series standings in 2010. He also made one NASCAR Sprint Cup start last season, finishing 17th at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas, last November while driving for Wood Brothers Racing.
He plans to run the full NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule with Roush Fenway Racing in addition to the 17 events in the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford.
