Biffle gets new crew chief
July 12th, 2011
Matt Puccia will serve as crew chief for Roush Fenway’s Greg Biffle from next weekend’s Sprint Cup series race at New Hampshire, the team announced.
As the season gets to its halfway point and only eight races ahead of the championship playoff, Puccia will take over from Greg Erwin who led Biffle to Chase berths in the past three years after being the crew chief of the #16 Ford since 2007.
Biffle is the only Roush driver without a win this year and currently ranks 14th in points, provisionally out of Chase contention while his three team-mates are currently in position to be part of the playoff.
Puccia has been with Roush Fenway Racing since the end of 2004 and was most recently assigned to the research and development program.
He was crew chief for Paul Menard in a partial season in the Nationwide Series in 2009, then leading the team to fifth in the standings last year. His first role as crew chief within the organization was in 2006, starting in the Truck series.
“Matt Puccia has been a very effective and successful crew chief with the organization in both the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series,” said team owner Jack Roush. “Most recently he has led the research and development efforts for our superspeedway program which helped put David Ragan in victory lane in Daytona.
“This is a natural progression of our crew chief development and I have every confidence that he will do well in this new role. Greg Erwin has made a significant contribution to our engineering efforts and our program is better because of him.”
Biffle’s most recent win came during last year’s Chase at Kansas, which was his fifth beside Erwin. Their best season came in their first full year together when they finished third in the standings in 2008.
“I am excited for the opportunity to work with Matt Puccia,” said Biffle. “Greg Erwin led this team to the Chase the past three years and I look forward to Matt doing the same.”
Erwin is expected to have a new role within RFR, which will be announced at a later date.
