KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Third-generation stock-car driver Ty Dillon earned his first ARCA Racing Series victory Thursday evening at Kansas Speedway.
Dillon, the 18-year-old grandson of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team owner Richard Childress, entered the pits in fourth with 12 laps remaining and came out the leader
While his No. 41 Chevrolet stumbled on the restart, Dillon lost the lead for one lap to Steve Arpin. However, Dillon drove back past Arpin on lap 95 of the 100-lap Kansas 150 on the 1.5-mile superspeedway
“I messed up on the restart,” said Dillon, who became the 12th first-time winner in the ARCA Racing Series this season. “I had bad restarts all day. I have to work on that, but I never gave up.”
“This is the best thing that happened to me all week,” said Childress, who lost his team’s appeal of a NASCAR penalty on Wednesday.
From there, Dillon cruised to a two-second victory over Arpin, who brought the Venturini Motorsports Toyota home in second spot.
Craig Goess finished third and trimmed Patrick Sheltra’s point lead to 10 markers with only the season finale at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway Oct. 9 remaining.
Polesitter Mikey Kile finished fourth with Sheltra fifth.
Tom Hessert, Jr., Frank Kimmel, Joey Coulter, Chad McCumbee and Justin Marks rounded out the top five.
Hessert is third in the standings, 10 points behind Goess and 20 behind Sheltra.
