Drama In Daytona: Johnson Crashes In Rolex Practice
January 28th, 2010

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Four-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson was uninjured in a hard crash during practice for this weekend’s Rolex 24 At Daytona Grand American sports-car race.
Johnson crashed the No. 99 GAINSCO-sponsored Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet Riley, forcing the defending series championship team to revert to a backup car currently housed in the team’s Texas facility.
Johnson backed the Daytona Prototype entry hard into the barriers in the kink after making contact with a GT car. Johnson walked away from the crash with a few bumps and bruises, but the car took the brunt of the crash.
The impact was heavy enough to push the gearbox into the chassis supports and bend the chassis inwards and upwards, making it unusable for this weekends 24-hour marathon. Stallings crew members are currently on their way to Dallas, Texas, to retrieve the team’s backup car.
“Right now there are a number of people involved in the team who are scrambling around logistically trying to get an airplane from here back to Dallas, rent a Ryder truck with a lift on it, get the No. 98 car on that truck, drive all night with two drivers, try to get the car here by sometime in the morning and take the parts off this car that are serviceable and operable and try and put the two cars together and have a winning effort,” team owner Bob Stallings told SpeedTV.com.
Under Grand Am rules, once a car has taken practice laps the team is now allowed to switch to a backup car. Because of this, Stallings has submitted a new entry for the No. 98 machine and its four drivers — Johnson, Jimmy Vasser, Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty.
“While I’m certainly not happy with this, the good news is that we know that car,” Stallings said. “We won the championship with it in 2007. It has the most poles, front row starts and wins in a season.”
The team will attempt to have the car in Daytona early Friday so that they can prepare it for the second round of Rolex 24 qualifying, scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday.
