Franchitti Happy Where He Is In IndyCar
March 5th, 2010

FORT WORTH, Texas — There has been a lot of talk in recent years about open-wheel stars converging on NASCAR.
First there was Juan Pablo Montoya. Others, including Sam Hornish, Jr., Jacques Villeneuve, Patrick Carpentier and now Danica Patrick have followed.
Another driver, Dario Franchitti, also gave NASCAR a try and quickly found that it wasn’t for him.
“Everything is different,” Franchitti said at Texas Motor Speedway during media day this week. “If you come here to Texas in a stock car against an Indy car, it’s completely different. It feels like a different track. Going to Richmond is the same kind of deal. One is not easier than the other. They are just very different.”
After winning the 2007 IZOD IndyCar Series title while driving for Michael Andretti, Franchitti decided to switch to NASCAR under the wing of team owner Chip Ganassi.
Franchitti’s time spent in a stock car was far from successful. In 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup starts, Franchitti’s best finish was 22nd at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.
He did a bit better in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, where he earned the pole for an event at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) Int’l and collected two top-10 finishes in 18 starts between 2007 and 2008.
Still, Franchitti decided NASCAR wasn’t for him. He returned to the IZOD IndyCar Series last year and quickly returned to his championship-winning ways. He outlasted Scott Dixon and Ryan Briscoe to earn his second series crown.
“I definitely learned stuff while driving in NASCAR that took me out of my comfort zone and that made me a better driver,” said Franchitti. “Did it make me a quicker driver? I don’t know. But it definitely allowed me to do some stuff that I haven’t been able to do in the past and deal with different problems with the car. In a way it did make me a better driver. “
Franchitti was also quick to note that if any NASCAR driver decided to switch to the open-wheel ranks, they’d be in for the same rude awakening that he received when he climbed into a stock car for the first time.
“I often think if you take the best guy in Sprint Cup — which right now is obviously Jimmie (Johnson) — and you give him a couple of days to test and say ‘Alright go do the IndyCar Series,’ he would struggle for the first year and would figure it out I think,” Franchitti said.
Despite the struggles that Franchitti faced during his failed attempt to join the NASCAR realm, everything seemed to work out in the end.
“The timing was unfortunate, but at the same point I’m back doing exactly what I want to do. I would have liked to have been able to show what I can do in Sprint Cup. We did a bit in Nationwide, but it would have been nice to have been in a front running car. That would have been kind of cool,” Franchitti said. “But it all worked out for the best and I’m back driving in the IZOD IndyCar Series doing what I love to do.”
