Gateway Bids Adieu

DOVER, Del. — Dover Motorsports, Inc. put the final nail in the coffin of Gateway Int’l Raceway Wednesday, officially shutting down the doomed race track just 11 days after the track’s last NASCAR Nationwide Series race.
The company previously announced that it would not seek to run any NASCAR Series events at the facility located in Madison, Ill., in 2011, and the adjacent drag strip will be closed as well.
“Gateway is a tremendous facility in a great racing community, but we are simply unable to operate it with an acceptable return,” said Denis McGlynn, president and CEO of Dover Motorsports. “We truly appreciate the many years of dedication shown by our Gateway employees and their efforts to make Gateway such a great destination for all those passionate about our sport — from racing fans and drivers to sponsors, team owners and sanctioning bodies.”
The majority of the track is leased from third parties. The company owns approximately 150 acres of the facility and has been in discussions with several interested purchasers.
The 1.25-mile speedway, which included a 1.5-mile infield road course and the quarter-mile drag strip, officially opened with a CART World Series event May 24, 1997. It was a rival event to the IndyCar Series’s Indianapolis 500 the following day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The oval hosted its first of 15 NASCAR Nationwide Series events later that year and the first of 13 Camping World Truck Series races was run in 1998.
The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series made its first visit to the GIR drag strip in 1997 and raced there annually through the 2010 campaign.
The facility had been built on the site of a former race track, which had been known as St. Louis Raceway Park and Gateway Int’l Raceway. The site was acquired by former Grand Prix of Long Beach promoter Chris Pook and a group of investors in 1995, with the new Gateway Int’l Raceway opening in 1994.
The track was later purchased by Dover Downs Entertainment.
Brad Keselowski, who won last month’s Nationwide Series race at the track, goes down as the final winner there.
