Karthikeyan Headed Back To Formula One

MADRID, Spain — Narain Karthikeyan, the native of India who was voted the most popular driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2010, will return to Formula One this year to drive for HRT.
Karthikeyan, who last competed in the sport in 2005 for Jordan, tested for the Williams team in 2006 to 2007 and remains the only Indian driver to score world championship points, started nine NASCAR Camping World Truck Series events in 2010 with a best finish of 11th at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.
“It’s been a while in the making, but I am extremely happy to be racing again in Formula One in 2011,” said the 33 year-old. “I’ve always maintained that I have not given up on my desire to return to the pinnacle of world motorsport. I am confident that I still have the pace, the fitness and the will to succeed in Formula One.
“I’m looking forward to racing for Hispania Racing, and to working again with Dr Colin Kolles. We have a long-standing and excellent working relationship together. I’m also looking forward to racing at the first ever Indian Grand Prix in October, and I hope that the Indian public will spur me on with their blessings and good wishes.”
Karthikeyan was the lead driver for A1 Team India in A1GP for two seasons and won two events between 2007 and 2008. In 2009 he raced for the Kolles Audi Team in the Le Mans Series and the Le Mans 24-Hour race, becoming the first Indian to compete in the legendary event. The car finished seventh overall.
In 19 Formula One starts during the 2005 season, Karthikeyan scored a best finish of fourth during the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which was marred by a tire controversy.
HRT endured a difficult debut season in 2010, which included no pre-season testing and a changing driver line-up. Bruno Senna, Karun Chandhok, Sakon Yamamoto and Christian Klien each took turns driving the two HRT entries, eventually leading the team to an 11th place finish in the team standings. The team did not score any world championship points.
The team has yet to announce who will partner with Karthikeyan in 2011, but has ruled out Senna.
