Logano Repeats, Redeems In Irwindale
January 31st, 2010

IRWINDALE, Calif. — Joey Logano dominated Saturday night’s NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, earning his second triumph in the post-season contest for NASCAR’s top developmental drivers and redeeming himself after a controversial finish in last year’s edition.
The 2007 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champ swapped the lead five times with pole sitter Sergio Pena, who was making his first start in NASCAR’s top developmental series, and led a race-high 171 laps during the 225-lap contest before a sold-out crowd. Pena, a 16-year-old late-model driver from Winchester, Va., paced the field for 54 circuits, but Logano mastered two late-race restarts to claim the $31,000 win.
Two-time Showdown winner Matt Kobyluck passed Pena for second following the final restart on lap 218, but Pena was able to regain the runner-up position to finish ahead of Kobyluck, Matt DiBenedetto and Andrew Myers.
“It was fun. He (Pena) gave me a run for the money, that’s for sure,” said Logano, who crossed the finish line first in last year’s race but was penalized to last place for aggressive driving. “I knew during the whole race if he ever got by, he was just going to pull away, and a couple times he did; he just checked out on me. I did everything I could to hold him back there. I thought it was pretty cool how he raced me clean.
“The biggest thing was it was all about restarts, and there were plenty of them, and I think that’s pretty much where we won the race. We had a good car — probably not a winning car, but I think we had a decent car good enough to win with the right scenarios.”
Eric Holmes, David Mayhew, Eddie MacDonald, Paulie Harraka and Steve Park completed the top 10.
