DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Michael Waltrip Racing teammates David Reutimann and Martin Truex, Jr. led the first day of preseason testing Thursday at Daytona Int’l Speedway.
While most drivers opted to make single-car runs, a handful of drivers tested the draft during the afternoon session at the recently repaved 2.5-mile superspeedway. Reutimann was the fastest of the group, clocking in at 195.780 miles per hour.
Truex was second-fastest, timing in at 195.776 miles per hour. Red Bull Racing teammates Brian Vickers and Kasey Kahne were third and fourth, followed by Tony Stewart.
The drivers and teams are using this three-day test session to prepare for the Daytona 500, scheduled for Feb. 20.
“It’s going to be wild,” said Truex of the Daytona 500. “It’s going to be fun. I love racing here. Here and Talladega [Superspeedway] are some of the [most fun] races for us as drivers until you get in a wreck, and then you’re just [ticked] off, and you’re [ticked] off until you come back and hoping to finish the next one.”
Aside from first laps on new asphalt, Thursday also marked the first day of at-track work for new crews, new team members and new personnel combinations. Teams were also testing out several changes to their race cars, including a reconfigured splitter and the new Sunoco Green E15 fuel that will be used in 2011.
Completing the top-10 during Thursday’s day-long test session were Jeff Gordon, Clint Bowyer, Jamie McMurray, Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards.
