Randy LaJoie Reinstated By NASCAR
August 26th, 2010
CONCORD, N.C. — Two-time NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Randy LaJoie has been reinstated by NASCAR after completing a NASCAR-approved treatment program after testing positive for marijuana earlier this season.
“I am thankful to NASCAR for reinstating me for competition, and grateful to my friends and family who supported me through this time,” said LaJoie, who was suspended on June 22 for violating of NASCAR’s substance abuse policy. “This has been a tremendous learning and growing process for me, and I have come through it a stronger, better person. I am looking forward to returning to work, and continuing to prove to NASCAR, my colleagues, my family and my friends that this was an isolated incident that I have put behind me.”
At the time of LaJoie’s positive test he was working for Joe Gibbs Racing as the spotter for Brad Coleman in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. In order to become a licensed NASCAR crew member LaJoie was required to submit to a drug test, which he failed and was subsequently suspended.
The Connecticut native won 15 Nationwide Series races during his career, most of them as the driver of the No. 74 Fina Chevrolet for owner Bill Baumgardner, with whom he won the 1996 and 1997 Nationwide Series championships.
LaJoie is the owner of Joie of Seating, a racing seat design business he founded. He also leads the Safer Racer Tour, a non-profit organization that was designed to help reach out to the auto racers many feel are most at risk; the numerous short track drivers around the country.
