Sadler Ends Long NASCAR Drought
July 31st, 2010
LONG POND, Pa. — Elliott Sadler pumped his fist wildly inside his No. 2 Grand Touring Vodka Chevrolet as he claimed his first Camping World Truck Series victory in a wild finish in the inaugural NASCAR Camping World Pocono Mountains 125 Saturday at Pocono Raceway.
It took two attempts at a green-white-checkered finish and five extra laps, but the Emporia, Va., native charged out in front of the field on the final restart, leaving Kasey Kahne and Matt Crafton to battle for the runner-up position.
“It is hard to put into words what this means to me to have a tough couple years like we’ve had in the cup series and things not go how you wanted them to as far as running up front and winning races and leading laps and things like that,” said Sadler, who joined the exclusive group of drivers who have won in the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Truck Series. “ You sit at home a lot, wondering if you will make it back to victory lane. Are you ever going to have that situation again….This to me, I know it is recent and it is today, but it feels like the biggest win of my career.”
Kahne finished second, Crafton third, Aric Almirola fourth and Justin Lofton rounded out the top five in the 55-lap event on the 2.5-mile triangular-shaped race track.
Kahne, Todd Bodine and Denny Hamlin each took a shot at the point after Sadler led the first 20 laps.
Each seemed dominant when leading.
But one by one, Sadler’s challengers found trouble. First, Bodine spun his No. 30 Germain.com Toyota after contact with Austin Dillon’s No. 3 Chevrolet on lap 42. Then Hamlin tagged wall.
That left Kahne, who was trying to claim his third victory in the truck series in as many career starts. Kahne thought he should have won.
“I just didn’t get it done today, I thought we had the truck to beat,” Kahne said.
Restarting fourth after a caution flag for an accident involving Ron Hornaday’s No. 33 Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Chevrolet, Kahne made a final charge toward the front.
But a side-by-side battle with Matt Crafton for second allowed Sadler, who was driving Kevin Harvick’s No. 2, to separate from the duo en route to a .445-second victory.
For Sadler, the victory couldn’t come at a better time for the driver of the No. 19 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.
Sadler will not be back with the team in 2011, making runs like this especially important as the veteran driver searches for a new ride.
“My wife and I laid in bed last night and I slept about an hour and a half last night and that’s it,” Sadler said. “And I’ll tell you why. I knew we had a truck that could win the race. And I knew that with all the stuff that’s going on in my career, with all the people that I’m talking to. This was a great time for me to be able to run good and sit on the pole…Then to come today and win the race, I thought I was putting all my eggs in one basket when I came up here this weekend.”
Todd Bodine retained a 149-point advantage over Aric Almirola after finishing 12th.
