Smith Sticking With Furniture Row
August 26th, 2010
DENVER — Regan Smith has signed a contract extension with Furniture Row Racing that will keep him with the team through the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.
“Regan is a young, talented driver with an outstanding future,” said Joe Garone, Furniture Row Racing general manager. “He has done a great job as our athlete and also as a spokesperson for our organization. The contract extension does indeed express a serious commitment by both the race team and driver.”
Smith, the 2008 Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year, is currently in his second season driving for Colorado-based Furniture Row Racing. Last year he competed on a part-time basis, qualifying for 18 races with a career-best finish of 12th at Daytona Int’l Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., during the Coke Zero 400 in July.
The 26-year-old native of New York is running the full Sprint Cup schedule this season and will do the same the next two years.
“I am both happy and humbled about the contract extension,” said Smith. “Furniture Row Racing is a team on the move. I feel we’ve made some big gains this season and we are all encouraged about the future. I really admire the behind-the-scenes work ethic and commitment of each and every member of this team. They want to win as bad as I do and I am proud to be their driver.”
Smith made his Sprint Cup debut in 2007 driving the No. 01 U.S. Army Chevrolet for owner Bobby Ginn. The team was later purchased by Dale Earnhardt, Inc., with whom Smith ran the full 2008 Sprint Cup schedule.
Smith is best known for beating Tony Stewart to the finish during a Sprint Cup event at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway that season, but having the victory taken away after NASCAR officials determined he had passed Stewart below the yellow line at the bottom of the speedway prior to reaching the finish line.
“We have a team of proven employees, state-of-the-art equipment and dedicated partners,” said Garone. “We are producing increasingly positive performances and strongly feel that we’re on the right path to become a contending team.”
