Vickers Out For Remainder Of Season
May 21st, 2010

CONCORD, N.C. — Brian Vickers said Friday that he will miss the remainder of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season after blood clots were found in his lungs and left leg two weeks ago while visiting Washington, D.C.
In order to disperse the blood clots, Vickers has been placed on blood thinners for the immediate future. Because of the danger of injury and the risk of bleeding involved while he is on blood thinners, Vickers, his doctors and Red Bull Racing officials jointly decided it was best if Vickers took some time off.
“Being young, a race car driver who is 26, I thought I was invincible,” Vickers told the media Friday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. “Due to what happened and the blood thinners that I’m on, I’ll be be out of the car for the next six months, the rest of the year.
“If something changes and I can get back in sooner, then great. But right now its going to be the rest of the season. As you can imagine, that is killing me.”
Vickers said that even if he could return in three months, he would prefer not to risk any issues with the blood thinners just to race in the final eight events of the year. Instead he will shift his focus to 2011 and the Daytona 500.
“Anytime you are on blood thinners you run the risk of bleeding, either internally or externally. That is basically my limiting factor,” Vickers said. “Everything just kind of increases in risk, whether its race car driving or doing the things I love. So basically I can’t do most of the things I love, because most of the things I love are pretty crazy.”
Casey Mears drove the car last weekend at Dover (Del.) Int’l Speedway and will drive the car again Saturday during the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.
Red Bull Racing General Manager Jay Frye said a long-term decision on who will drive the car the rest of the year hasn’t been made, but he does not anticipate any further driver changes with the exception of possibly putting a different driver in for the two road course events.
