What Happens in Vegas…
by Jason Lofing on March 3rd, 2010
Week Four of Season One, 2010 of the NASCAR iRacing Class C Series (NiCCS) is in the books and once again, the points lead changed hands after a week of racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS). With Thomas Hazard sitting out Week Four, the championship lead was up for the taking. Now the only question that needed to be answered was just who would take command?
Jesse Atchison is the driver who took command in Hazard’s absence. It was not the greatest week ever for Atchison, but his 192 points was good enough to vault the Atlantic Club driver to the top of the board in the overall championship with 862 points total. Another former points leader this season, Jason Burstein, holds second place overall, a paltry 16 points behind Atchison. A bit farther back, Tyler D Hudson sits third, 23 points back of the leader. Defending NiCCS champion Josh Berry holds fourth, only three points behind Hudson and 26 back of points leader Atchison. Quite the comeback from a poor Daytona week for the champ, especially since drop weeks have not even come into play yet. Rounding out the top five after Week Four is Brandon Buchberger, 40 points back of the leader and the last driver within 100 points of the top spot.

Josh Berry (1), Tyler D Hudson (3) and Jesse Atchison battled in Thursday's high SOF race.
Highlighting the week was a 3945 Strength of Field (SOF) on Thursday night. Hudson, Berry, and Atchison all took part in the action, knowing a win in a high SOF could mean the difference in the championship when all is said and done. Berry started on the pole but was quickly passed by Hudson. The two Mid-South club members stayed nose-to-tail for much of the race, pulling away from the rest of the field that simply looked overmatched at times. Berry reclaimed the top spot on pit road, as five caution flags for 15 laps kept the field bunched-up. However, not even the defending champ himself could keep Hudson behind him when the green flag flew again. Berry needed to make something happen, and happen fast as time was running out.
His tires having one last surge left in them, Berry closed-in on Hudson’s back bumper coming to two laps to go. However things got heated further back when Daniel Pope II backed into the Turn Four wall after trying to keep from running over Atchison in their battle for the fifth spot. The yellow flew, and with only two laps remaining, the race was effectively over, with Hudson prevailing and earning 247 for his effort. He also captured three other checkered flags at LVMS, wrapping-up a stellar four-for-four week.

Aided by a timely caution, Hudson prevailed over Berry for the win.
The NiCCS shifts gears in a big way for Week Five as the trucks take to the high banks and tight confines of Bristol Motor Speedway. To this point, all of the events have been on 1.5 mile race tracks or larger, and Week Five will be the first of four straight weeks on shorter tracks. Bristol is known for its carnage, leading to both wrecked race cars and dropping safety ratings. It would not be a surprise to see some of the top contenders use this as a drop week which could mean that once again, the points lead could very well be changing hands when all is said and done at Thunder Valley.
