Pirelli Ready For Formula One Challenge
January 23rd, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Having wound up its final private test session, Pirelli is ready for Formula One. The tire company made history when an F-1 car ran at night under the lights and on a wet track for the first time ever.
“In my opinion, Pirelli is ready now for F-1,” stated Pedro de la Rosa, Pirelli’s official tester since October. “The dry tire test went very well, and confirmed everything we had learned in Bahrain the week before.
“But the most original part of the test was when we were running at night on the wet tires, which was as new an experience for me as it was for everyone else. The most important thing was that the water levels were consistent, which allowed us to have some accurate results from the test. At the end of it, we’ve come up with two tires — wet and intermediate — which I believe are both competitive and stable.”
The test took place at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit, which was flooded with about 37,000 gallons of water for the two night sessions. Along with two days of dry tire running, Pirelli completed more than 1,250 miles.
In all, the total testing miles accumulated by Pirelli since the tires first ran at Italy’s Mugello circuit in August is more than 12,400.
“It’s been an extremely positive test session in Abu Dhabi,” said Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery. “We very much believe that Pirelli will be able to contribute to the spectacle of F-1 in the future and seeing the car kicking up huge plumes of spray under the floodlights has certainly been an amazing sight that we will all remember for a long time.
“While we are well aware that we are new to F-1 and still have plenty to learn, I’m confident that we can approach the start of this year’s official testing next month with a strong package.”
Pirelli has been working on tire compounds and constructions that will require a driver to pit twice, thus spicing up the races. The four dry weather compounds — super soft, soft, medium and hard — will have different colored sidewall lettering, thus making it easy for fans to spot which driver is using what tire.
Pirelli’s next test will commence at Spain’s Valencia circuit Feb. 1. It will be the first time the teams will have a chance to sample the rubber on track since the two-day test in Abu Dhabi last November.
