GP2 test for JK Racing Asia winner
September 21st, 2011
Organisers of the JK Racing Asia Series have announced that the 2011 championship winner will test a GP2 car with Caterham Team AirAsia next year.
The series, which uses old Formula BMW cars, will act as a support event for Formula 1 grands prix in Malaysia, Singapore and India.
The champion will join one of the official GP2 tests ahead of the 2012 season, at a date and venue to be announced later.
Team Lotus reserve driver Karun Chandhok is also a supporter of the project, with which he hopes to help young Asian drivers.
“I am very happy to be able to announce this award which comes about through our collaboration with AirAsia. This will be a great opportunity for one of the young aspiring future Formula 1 stars, currently racing in our JK Racing Asia Series,” said David Sonenscher, CEO of Motorsport Asia, organisers of the series.
“The whole purpose of the JK Racing Asia Series is to provide a platform to develop young talent out of Karting and towards their goal of Formula 1.
“A test with one of the leading GP2 Teams, which is just one step from Formula 1, will not only provide further motivation for them to secure the JK Racing Asia Title, but will also give them an opportunity to understand what will be expected from them in their future careers.
“I am very grateful to Tony Fernandes for putting this together as an added bonus to AirAsia’s involvement in the JK Racing Asia Series.”
AirAsia CEO and Team Lotus boss Tony Fernandes added: “At AirAsia we believe in making dreams a reality, and our extensive involvement in motorsports, from our Driver’s Development Program with Team Lotus and Team Lotus itself, amongst others, allows us to continually be a part of the growth of our youth as they pursue their future.
“To be able to offer this unique and exciting prize to the champion of the Series is an absolute pleasure, and we look forward to catching some of the upcoming races in Singapore and India.”
