Capirossi has surgery on hand injury
September 7th, 2010
Loris Capirossi has had successful surgery to his right hand following his accident at Misano, but does not yet know if he will be fit for the next grand prix at Aragon.
The Suzuki rider required a 90-minute operation to reconstruct the bone in his little finger and reattach a severed tendon following his first corner collision with Ducati’s Nicky Hayden in the San Marino Grand Prix.
The surgery was carried out in San Marino hospital by Dr Oliviero Soragni, and Capirossi has now returned home to recuperate. He is currently unsure if he will make the forthcoming Aragon Grand Prix on 19 September.
“The operation went very well and I am very pleased with what Dr Soragni told me after I came out of surgery,” said Capirossi. “Dr [Claudio] Costa [MotoGP surgeon] was also present and he knows how the injury will heal and he will help me to make the right decision about when I can ride again.
“The bone has been reconstructed and I have been told I will get full movement back – which is great news – but at the moment the finger is immobilised so I don’t cause any damage to the excellent work the surgeon has done.”
Capirossi also reiterated his sadness over the death of Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa in an accident during the San Marino GP weekend.
“Although I am in a bit of pain, this is still nothing compared to what happened at Misano on Sunday and once again I want to send my wishes and prayers to Tomizawa san’s family in their time of great sadness,” he said.
