ALMS Notes: Riley To Build ALMS Prototype Chassis
October 5th, 2010
BRASELTON, Ga. — There will be a new entry in 2011 in the American Le Mans prototype arena with the announcement that longtime Grand Am chassis supplier Bill Riley will produce a new design for the ALMS. What makes this more interesting is how much it will effect Riley’s relationship with Grand Am. Currently, only Lola of Britain supplies prototypes for both series.
- Speaking of prototypes, it had been hoped that Audi would rejoin the ALMS on a fulltime basis after a two-year absence in 2011. However, with an apparent lack of support from Volkswagen of America (the Audi importer here) for such a move, those plans now appear to be stillborn.
- While both Peugeot and Audi will have new cars for Le Mans next season, it is reported that Audi has yet to sign any drivers for the team. There are some who suggest that although the German brand will continue to run in that country’s Touring Car championship, as does Mercedes, it also might join its rival and enter Formula One, either as a team, or an engine supplier.
Should that happen, the sports car program might be transferred to Porsche, which will be fully integrated into the Volkswagen Group next year, making it like Audi, a VW subsidiary.
- The GT Challenge class, now an all-Porsche preserve, may find itself expanding to include new makes, with insiders saying that Audi, with its R8 supercar, and Mazda, are interested in entering the category.
- The issue of the ALMS’s television coverage for next season will likely not be resolved until November. Reportedly the discussions involve not only live vs. tape delayed, or documentary-type programming, but also the tour’s relationship with Speed.
- Yokohama Tire Corp. will sponsor the West Racing team and its two Lamborghinis in ALMS GT competition in 2011.
