Changes Coming To DP?
August 24th, 2010
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Grand Am Rolex Series is considering some changes for its Daytona Prototypes in 2011 that include a more efficient two-element rear wing, as well as the use of paddle shifters and a spec carbon clutch.
The real news is that Grand Am is also considering a major change to the appearance of its DP entries, replacing the current bulky cabs with their ultra large windshields with ones that are both lower and slimmer, and featuring compound curved windscreens like those found in the ALMS and Le Mans prototype coupes. If Grand Am does revise the configuration of the body shells of its DP cars, it has indicated that it will take place in 2012 rather than next season, and that the current DP will remain eligible to compete.
Intriguingly, there are also suggestions that the appearance of FIA President Jean Todt at the July Fourth weekend Daytona Rolex round may signal an alliance between the international governing body and Grand Am that could include a deal allowing for an interchange between the FIA’s current GT cars and their Rolex counterparts.
Insiders say that at this point, any such talks are in their preliminary stages. If Grand Am were to join forces with the FIA, and if the ALMS, which it most assuredly will do, remains wedded to Le Mans, whose regulations it uses, the power struggle between the L’Automobile Club du L’Ouest, which organizes the 24-Hour event, and the FIA could well find a new battleground on this side of the Atlantic.
