Peugeots Flawless In Sebring Sweep
March 21st, 2010

SEBRING, Fla. — Without the Sebring-conquering Audi powerhouse in this year’s edition of the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, the two-car Team Peugeot Total outfit asserted itself as the new kings of the road in Saturday’s American Le Mans Series season opener at Sebring Int’l Raceway.
After sweeping the front row during qualifying on Friday, Alexander Wurz, Marc Gene and Anthony Davidson powered their No. 07 Peugeot 908 HDi FAP to the overall victory and the LMP1 class win, 13.817 seconds ahead of teammates Sebastien Bourdais, Nicolas Minassian and Pedro Lamy.
With pit stops coming late in the closing stages of the 12-hour marathon, Wurz and Bourdais traded the lead, but when Bourdais spun on cold tires after exiting pit road, Wurz was able to pull away to reclaim his position at the front of the field. Though Bourdais narrowed the gap between the two Peugeots in the closing laps, the multi-time Champ Car World Series champion couldn’t quite catch his teammate.
“It is fantastic. It was an awesome race. It was very tough,” Wurz said after the win. “We were fighting all the way to the line. It was an awesome race.”
Stefan Mucke, sharing driving duties with Harold Primat and Adrian Fernandez, trailed the Peugeots in third in the No. 007 Lola B09 60/Aston Martin, four laps down.
Klaus Graf crossed the line in fourth in the No. 6 Porsche RS Spyder, claiming top honors for he and teammates Greg Pickett and Sascha Maassen in the LMP2 class, four laps ahead of nearest rivals David Brabham, Simon Pagenaud and Marino Franchitti in the No. 1 Porsche RS Spyder, who finished fifth overall.
In GT2, Jaime Melo, Gianmaria Bruni and Pierre Kaffer shared class honors after driving the Ferrari 430 GT to a sixth-place finish, one lap ahead of the BMW E92 M3s in seventh and eighth.
“I think all of the drivers did a great job and the crew prepared the car so that we could push and be consistent,” said Melo.
Scott Tucker, driving the Oreca FLM09 with Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Gue, claimed the LMPC title at Sebring with a 10th-place finish, while 18th-place finishers Juan Gonzalez, Butch Leitzinger and Leh Keen in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup were awarded GTC honors.
