Martin Untouchable In Barber 200
April 11th, 2010
LEEDS, Ala. — Try as he might, Billy Johnson couldn’t catch the Ford Mustang GT of Dean Martin, who held off Johnson’s late-race charge over the final half hour of Saturday’s Grand Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Barber 200 for the win at Barber Motorsports Park.
Taking over driving duties of the No. 52 Rehagen Racing Mustang from co-driver Bob Michaelian, Martin set the pace over the final 26 laps of the 2.3-mile, 17-turn Alabama road course. Though Johnson came on hard in the No. 61 Roush Performance Ford Mustang in the closing stages of the 76-lap contest, he and teammate Jack Roush, Jr. had to settle for runner-up honors when the race ended under caution after an accident with eight minutes remaining in the two-and-a-half-hour event.
“I was just trying to keep the car in one piece and turn it over to Dean,” Michaelian said after earning his first victory and the fifth for Martin. “He did a great job. He got it out in front and kept it there. I appreciate all the help from Rehagen Racing. It was set up perfectly.”
Coming home third were Joey Hand and Michael Marsal in the No. 97 Turner Motorsport BMW M3, denying Ford a sweep of the podium on a day the manufacturer dominated; Joe Foster, partnered with Scott Maxwell in the No. 15 Multimatic Motorsports Ford Mustang Boss 302R, paced the opening 44 laps before fading to eighth.
New point leaders Terry Borcheller and Andrew Hendricks drove the No. 45 Stable One Racing BMW M3 to a fourth-place finish ahead of Turner Motorsport co-drivers Bill Auberlen and Paul Dalla Lana in the No. 96 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 in fifth.
In the Street Tuner class, Tom Long earned his second-straight triumph for he and Derek Whitis in the No. 25 Aventura Technologies/Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 with a late-race move around the No. 21 Sick Kids Foundation Chevrolet Cobalt of Jamie Holtom and Andrew Danyliw.
Third were Ryan Eversley and Zach Lutz in the Compass360 Racing’s No. 75 Shunk2/Honda HPD Honda Civic Si ahead of class point leaders Lawson Aschenbach and David Thilenius in a second Compass 360 entry in fourth. Polesitter David White and BimmerWorld/GearWrench teammate James Clay completed the top five finishers.
