Pruett Holds Off Donohue In Miami
March 7th, 2010

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Scott Pruett held off a furious late-race challenge from David Donohue to win Saturday evening’s Grand Prix of Miami Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series event at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Pruett, who shared the Chip Ganassi Racing BMW-powered Riley with Memo Rojas, took control of the race during the final portion of the two and one-half-hour event, which started in the daylight and ended in darkness.
But before Pruett could collect his first victory of the season and his 23rd in the Rolex Series, he had to hold off Donohue, who had taken over for polesitter Darren Law in the Brumos Porsche.
Donohue made several runs at Pruett in the closing laps, but came up .255 seconds short at the checkered flag as the winners completed 129 laps of the 2.3-mile road course. Pruett led from lap 83 to the finish.
“It was incredible,” Pruett said. “It was a nail-biter at the end. It was kind of hard to see and if you got off line just a little bit it was slippery. It wasn’t a matter of keeping him back there, it was a matter of staying smart and making the right moves in traffic.”
Donohue and Law finished second, while Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty brought the Gainsco No. 99 home third.
The GT class victory went to the SpeedSource Mazda for the second-straight race, with Jeff Segal and Emil Assentato sharing the controls of the No. 70 Mazda RX-8.
