Shedden triumphs in race one
September 5th, 2010
Gordon Shedden claimed his fourth British Touring Car Championship victory of the year in the opening race at Knockhill.
The Honda driver out-dragged polesitter Alex MacDowall when the lights went out, held a massive slide at the first corner when the pair made contact, and led the whole race.
MacDowall took a career-best second place in his Chevrolet, 1.5 seconds behind Shedden, while Motorbase BMW driver Steven Kane completed the podium after passing Matt Neal for third on the penultimate lap.
Neal held off the advancing Tom Chilton (Arena Ford) and Jason Plato (Chevrolet) for fourth, although Plato still increased his championship lead to 15 points over Tom Onslow-Cole.
Arena Ford driver Onslow-Cole was involved in frenetic scenes in the midfield, triggered largely by the failure of the marshals to show the blue flags to debutant Jeff Smith – who was about to be lapped and did not, therefore, move aside for the quicker cars. Paul O’Neill dived inside the Triple 8 Vauxhall driver at McIntyres on lap 19, both ending up off the track and creating a titanic scrap for seventh between himself, Onslow-Cole, Mat Jackson’s Motorbase BMW and Andrew Jordan’s Eurotech Vauxhall.
Rob Collard had departed the battle after backing his WSR BMW into the tyres at Duffus Dip as a result of contact with both Onslow-Cole and Jordan. James Nash had also left the fray at the same corner, Jackson spinning the Triple 8 driver into the gravel. Onslow-Cole eventually claimed seventh ahead of O’Neill, Jordan and Jackson.
The race featured two safety car periods; both for debris on the track. The debris in the first instance was caused by first-corner excursions for John George (Tech-Speed Honda) and Andy Neate (WSR BMW).
