Cottle Goes Low And Slow
January 15th, 2011
TULSA, Okla. — Shane Cottle was a sitting duck, but a caution flag waved with five laps remaining and saved the day for the Indiana open-wheel racer who took advantage of the break and won Friday night’s preliminary feature during the 25th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals at Tulsa Expo Raceway.
Cottle, who also won a preliminary feature at the Chili Bowl in 2007, jumped from inside the second row to take the lead on the opening lap and has become his style on the short tracks of Indiana, went to the low groove and stayed there.
At one point Cottle held a straightaway advantage while Dave Darland, Brad Loyet and Kevin Swindell waged a torrid battle for second behind him.
But during the second half of the race with the leaders in traffic and the high groove coming in Cottle was mired among slower cars with the competition closing in from behind.
“Oh, I kept looking at the board, I knew they were back there and who was coming,” Cottle said after the race.
Swindell got his No. 39 hooked up on the cushion and had taken second from Loyet and was nearly even with Cottle in lapped traffic when Brian Brown spun in turn four on lap 21.
Cottle had new life and restarted ahead of the field with Loyet, Swindell and Darland following after scoring reverted back to the completion of lap 20.
When Roger Slack waved the green flag to restart the race, Cottle charged to the bottom and Darland went to the cushion.
Cottle slipped away to victory while Darland charged around Loyet and Swindell to finish second after having started on the pole.
Swindell edged Loyet for the third and final guaranteed starting spot in Saturday’s feature. Loyet and Daryn Pittman completed the top five.
Cottle credited car owner/crew chief Daryl Saucier for the victory.
“You have to build a good car to beat these guys, and Daryl did it,” Cottle said.
Meanwhile, Darland said the cushion came in just a little too late to help him to victory.
“I’ve seen him do that on the bottom many times,” Darland said of Cottle. “If it is good down there you may as well use it. There was nothing there in the center of turns three and four for most of the race. It was tricky. It didn’t work its way up for a long time and finally at the end of the race it did.”
