Crawford Wins Chili Bowl Thriller
January 13th, 2011
TULSA, Okla. — Donnie Ray Crawford became the first Oklahoman to win a preliminary feature at the Chili Bowl Nationals Wednesday night and he did it by leading only the final few feet in one of the most exciting finishes in the 25-year history of the indoor midget event at Tulsa Expo Raceway at Quik Trip Center.
Following a restart with only two laps remaining, Crawford was following leaders Damion Gardner and Cole Whitt, who had led the entire race until Gardner slid past him for the lead on lap 22 of the 25-lap race.
Whitt kept pace with Gardner on the restart with two to go tried to slide past the 2008 Chili Bowl champion entering turn four on the final lap of the fifth-mile dirt track.
As Whitt moved up in front of Gardner, Crawford charged to the bottom of the track. Gardner saw a hole and made it three-wide as the trio raced for the checkered flag.
Gardner and Whitt made contact with Gardner’s Loyet Motorsports machine going airborne and flipping across the finish line, but behind Crawford, who took the checkered flag on the track. Meanwhile, Whitt’s No. 71 skidded to a stop just feet short of the finish line. He was scored 17th.
As a result, Thomas Meseraull, who finished with an ailing engine, took the third and final guaranteed starting spot in Saturday night’s 25th anniversary Chili Bowl Midget Nationals. Bobby East and Kevin Ramey rounded out the top five.
“You don’t get that lucky very often,” said Crawford, who became the first home stater to win here since Andy Hillenburg claimed the Chili Bowl Nationals title in 1994.
“I saw Cole and I thought he was going to protect the bottom,” Crawford said. “I didn’t think he would try to slide Damion, but sure enough he slid across and collected Damion in the process.”
Gardner said it was the last lap and everyone was going for it.
“I wasn’t sure he was going to make a run on me, but it’s the Chili Bowl and he tried it,” Gardner explained. “I saw a hole there and I just went for it and I clipped him a little bit. I knew I was going to flip across the finish line and I did. Now, I’ve done that and hopefully never will again.”
