Ferrari Reshuffles Engineers
January 14th, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Chris Dyer has lost his post as head of race track engineering following Ferrari’s pit strategy fiasco in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that cost Fernando Alonso the world championship. Pat Fry replaces Dyer who has been moved to another position within the Scuderia as part of a reshuffle of the engineering department.
Fry was an engineer at McLaren for 18 years and worked for Benetton before that. He joined Ferrari last July.
“Joining the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro is the respected engineer, Neil Martin, who takes on the role of heading up the new operations research department,” Ferrari said in a statement. “A 38-year-old Englishman, Martin previously worked for Red Bull and prior to that McLaren and he will now report directly to technical director, Aldo Costa.
“At the same time, Costa’s deputy, Pat Fry will, in addition to his current role, take on the job of head of race track engineering…this position was held by Chris Dyer and his role within the company will be redefined in the next few days.”
Ferrari blundered in Abu Dhabi when it decided to have Alonso pit shortly after Mark Webber. Both drivers got bogged down in traffic, which allowed Sebastian Vettel to win the race and the championship. Alonso needed to finish in the top five to take the title but ended up seventh.
“The mistake was of a very great magnitude,” Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali told the Italian media recently. “It produced devastating effects. In a normal race it would have been a normal mistake. We need to avoid throwing everything into the sea, even the good things, just because of this mistake. But we will be making changes and we’ll announce them very soon.
“We will put whoever has to take delicate decisions in a position to have all the tools not to make mistakes again.”
After the Abu Dhabi race, Domenicali and Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo both refused to blame a specific individual for the fiasco. It was win as a team, lose as a team, they said.
