It’s All Swindell In Tulsa
January 14th, 2011
JUST REWARDS: Sammy Swindell after winning the 2009 Chili Bowl Nationals.
TULSA, Okla. — Jerry Coons, Jr. may have said it best after finishing second on the third night of the 25th anniversary Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Thursday at Tulsa Expo Raceway.
“When he (Sammy Swindell) starts on the pole, you usually aren’t going to get a shot at him,” Coons said.
And no one did as Swindell led all 25 laps, holding off Coons, who started outside the front row, to win the third preliminary feature of the week and put himself in prime position to win his sixth Chili Bowl championship on Saturday night.
Swindell comes to the Chili Bowl with one mission — winning — every year. In fact, his car sits in the corner of his shop all year waiting for one week of action.
Interestingly, Swindell won while driving the same car with the same Esslinger engine that he used 10 years ago. He just tweaks on it a little every year.
“This car has an awesome record here and we have had some unbelievable fortune here,” said Swindell, who was cheered loudly upon exiting his car and taking a bow atop the rollcage of his No. 1 Spike.
Swindell acknowledged he never really pushed it all night long.
“I was just cruising along and trying to make decent laps and not make any mistakes and I played it right, it worked out for us,” said Swindell. “I didn’t want to give it away. They were going to have to take it from me.”
Coons, driving for the first time for Canadian sprint-car ace Glenn Styres in a No. 0 prepared by Scott Benic, was pleased with his effort.
“It is great to be locked in to the show on Saturday night in a car I’ve never driven before,” Coons said. “We’ve come a long way since the practice on Monday.”
The final locked in spot in Saturday’s feature went to third-generation racer Nick Knepper, who traded second with Coons during the middle stages of Thursday’s feature.
“It doesn’t get much better than this, sitting on the podium with Sammy Swindell and Jerry Coons, Jr. It’s surreal,” Knepper said.
Steve Buckwalter and Shane Golobic rounded out the top five.
