Winner May Come From The Front Row

TULSA, Okla. — It looks like a pretty good bet that the winner of the 25th anniversary Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals will come from the front row of tonight’s 50-lap feature on the quarter-mile Tulsa Expo Raceway dirt track inside the Quik Trip Center.
USAC National Driving Champion Bryan Clauson, who won Tuesday night’s preliminary feature, drew the pole from among the four preliminary-night winners with five-time Chili Bowl champion Sammy Swindell, who won Thursday night, starting outside the front row.
Clauson has never won the Chili Bowl.
But it is the biggest midget car race on the planet and anything can and does happen.
“I’ve won. I’ve been taken out,” said Swindell whose son Kevin who won last year and will start 10th. “I’ve been in the front. I’ve been in the back. Anything can happen.”
Friday night winner Shane Cottle and Wednesday night victory Donnie Ray Crawford will start in the second row. Row three features former Chili Bowl winners Damion Gardner and Jerry Coons, Jr., with fan favorite Dave Darland, who is seeking his first Chili Bowl triumph, and Australian driver Michael Pickens in row four.
Third-generation race Nick Knepper shares row 10 with Swindell, while Thomas Meseraull and Jon Stanbrough make up the sixth row.
The final six rows will be filled by drivers transferring through Saturday’s alphabet soup which begins at noon with the first of two K mains. More than 250 drivers will compete during the course of the day.
Among those in the field for the two B mains are former Chili Bowl winners Johnny Heydenreich, Tracy Hines, Cory Kruseman and Tim McCreadie. Others in the B mains include Brad Loyet, Bobby East, Chris Windom, Levi Jones, Steve Buckwalter, Jason Leffler, Brad Sweet, Brad Kuhn and Daryn Pittman.
