Button, Hamilton Getting Along As Teammates
March 8th, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — With single-car F-1 testing rules, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton never were on the track as the same time during the preseason. Button defeated Hamilton in a go-kart race last week, but they head into the season the best of teammates.
“Working with [Hamilton] now, he is very, very easy to get on with; very professional,” Button said. “I was blown away with how well mannered he is. It just shows his family upbringing. He’s the kind of guy who opens the door for you. I mean, I do, too, but more for women.”
But what happens when they finally go head-to-head on a grand prix weekend?
“You always go into a team thinking you’re equal to the best in the world,” Button said. “Nobody ever knows until you race against other drivers who are competitive. But I’m not going into the first race thinking ‘If he beats me in this race, that’s it, it’s game over.’
“Nor am I thinking if I beat him ‘Yay, that’s it, I’ve won the championship.’ It’s not like that. It’s a 19-race series, a long championship, and we will see what happens.”
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: “At some point, one of them is going to feel uncomfortable because he is getting beaten by the other.”
Will both McLaren drivers still be smiling as broadly at the end of the season?
