Ottinger Stays Hot, Wins Third Straight
by Jason Lofing on May 15th, 2013
It’s official: Nick Ottinger is on a roll. The second year NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship driver captured his third win in a row Tuesday night at Darlington Raceway with yet another dominating performance. He becomes the first driver in the four year history of the NiSWC to win three straight races. Ottinger started-off the night by capturing his second pole position of the season, then capped it off by leading 173 of 183 laps at what many consider the most demanding track on the circuit. “Three straight for the #05 Rheem Chevrolet! Can’t believe it!” said Ottinger. “After the third or fourth caution I barely scraped the wall off (Turn) Four and it hurt my right front toe, however I had such a lead I had to just fight [...]

In an action-packed Round Six of the iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series, Greger Huttu claimed victory at Sebring International Raceway to further extend his lead at the top of the standings. Huttu’s fourth win of the year sees his bid to retain the world title move another step closer, with a third of the 2013 season remaining. Starting second on the grid, alongside pole-sitter Martin Krönke, Team Redline’s Huttu was able to avoid a start-line incident that embroiled several mid-field runners. Spinning his wheels at the start, Mogar Filho’s virtual Williams-Toyota FW31 headed right, bounced off the pit wall and turned perpendicular into traffic. This put the Brazilian in the paths of Teemu Iivonen, Jason Lovett, and Pierre Urbizu, who collided with the Radicals Racing car in spectacular fashion. [...]

The Lady in Black. The Track Too Tough to Tame. Whatever you call it, Darlington Raceway is certainly a very, very unique track on the NASCAR circuit. Its egg-shaped design provides the sim racers with a tough battle as they try to navigate around the 1.366-mile track in just over 28.5 seconds. Even with running one of the most difficult tracks on the iRacing.com service, an astounding 1,608 sim racers took the green flag for at least one event in Week Two of the NASCAR iRacing Class C Fixed Series. One person who didn’t shy away from the challenges of Darlington Raceway was Kollin Keister (Atlantic). He battled against some heavy hitters as he took the checkered flag in the week’s top Strength of Field event by 0.342 seconds over [...]
Red Sox Spring Fling at Sebring
May 13th, 2013
Story by James Prostell Jr. SEBRING, FL. – After a month-long hiatus, the cars and stars of the Red Sox Racing League’s McLaren Turbo Challenge kicked off season two of the fixed racing series Thursday night. Over the next three months the points battle will rage through famous tracks around the world including Spa, Laguna Seca, Twin Ring Motegi, and Daytona with the drivers competing in identical McLaren MP4-12C GT3 race cars. As daunting as the historical tracks may be, the McLaren is definitely up for the challenge. It’s V8 engine pushes out 550 horsepower (after being detuned to meet FIA regulations!), and mated with an aero package crafted in McLaren’s F1 simulator makes this one GT3 car to look out for. This week the competitors visit sunny Sebring, Florida [...]
Hockaday Tops at ‘Dega
by Chris Owens on May 13th, 2013
With Season One of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class B Series in the books, drivers and teams took a week to get rested and ready for the second season of 2013. The biggest and baddest race track of them all lay ahead for everyone: Talladega Superspeedway in eastern Alabama. Talladega provides everyone with a chance to win, so it’s no surprise to see over 700 sim-racers compete in Week One. Randy Hockaday would lay claim to the biggest race of the week, the weekly Strength of Field race on Friday night. Hockaday took home 358 points for the win and the overall points lead following Talladega. inRacingNews’ own Tom Moustakas crossed the line just .052 second behind Hockaday, earning Moustakas 343 points for his runner-up finish. Carl Taylor finished third with [...]
Get to Know . . . Tyler Laughlin
by David Ifeguni on May 13th, 2013
I think many of you can relate to this statement: When you first started out sim racing, you really didn’t take it seriously, but then something in you made you realize that if you try, you could really accomplish a great deal. That is definitely the case for iRacer Tyler Laughlin from Knoxville, Tennessee. If you look at his career statistics, he had fairly good numbers since joining the service on December 25th in 2008, all the way up until 2011. During that stretch he averaged about a dozen oval wins and 49 top fives per year. Something changed for 2012: Laughlin got serious. In 323 oval starts in 2012, he won 101 and scored 202 top five finishes. So far in 2013, he has started 76 races and has [...]
Show ‘Em What You’ve Got
by David Phillips on May 13th, 2013
Heading to Darlington Raceway on Tuesday, the 2013 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship is off to a hectic start. Series leaders Tyler D Hudson and Brian Schoenburg are still looking for their first wins; likewise two-time defending champion Ray Alfalla, who has clawed his way back into the reckoning after opening the campaign with 42nd and 36th place finishes in two of the first three events. Meanwhile, Daytona winner Adam Gilliland finds himself P8 . . . three better than Phoenix winner (and 2012 championship runner-up) Michael Conti, who failed to qualify for the season opener. All the more remarkable, then, that just five races into the young season Nick Ottinger already has a pair of wins to his credit, with back-to-back triumphs at Texas Motor Speedway and Richmond International [...]
Terrell and Brandt Conquer the Cork
by Matt Kingsbury on May 12th, 2013
The first week of online racing in both the fixed and open Indy Car Road Series took place in sunny California with the sim-racers looking to tear-up Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway. The venue located at Monterey hosts 11 corners over a 2.238 mile river of bending tarmac. In Week One of the Road open setup series 33 drivers took to the track, while the fixed road series saw 236 drivers attempt to conquer the course and its biggest obstacle – “The Corkscrew” a blind downhill corner that can catch the best driver off-guard. One driver who stood out from the others when it came to conquering The Corkscrew was Courtney Terrell (Indiana) who won the Strength of Field race and took home the Week One points lead in the Indy [...]
Majeski Masters USA International
by Ray Kingsbury on May 12th, 2013
Sim-racers have a unique opportunity to race at USA International Speedway, a track with a short yet eventful history. In its one and a half decade of existence, USA International Speedway hosted various series and was once a popular testing ground for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Though the now defunct track simply remains as an open lot, like Australia’s Oran Park, it lives-on – virtually — thanks to iRacing.com. The .75 mile concrete oval with turns banked at 14 degrees is one of the few tracks that perfectly suited the opening week of the NASCAR iRacing.com Late Model Series. This week we decided to shift our focus away from the Strength of Field race and towards another Strength of Field race which had some of the most competitive driving [...]
iRacer Profile: Olli Pahkala
by David Phillips on May 11th, 2013
Olli Pahkala is not one to waste time. Since joining joining the iRacing service late last summer, his has been a fast and steady rise through the ranks to the upper echelon of online road racing. After spending the last weeks of 2012 S2 and most of S3 racing (relatively) low-powered cars, he found himself behind the wheel of a virtual Williams-Toyota FW31 in S4 and promptly won eight races in the iRacing.com Grand Prix Series. Not content with than, the Finn reloaded for 2013 S1 and dusted all comers, roaring to 15 wins and 26 tops fives in 38 starts, outdistancing Yuho Abe and Rocco Barone for the title. In addition, he teamed with Greger Huttu, Jukka Savolainen & Co to bring Club Finland its first World Cup of [...]
Doyle and Goke Early IndyCar Oval Series Leaders
by Matt Kingsbury on May 10th, 2013
The first week of 2013 Season 2 saw the iRacing.com Indy Car Series take to Charlotte Motor Speedway’s 1.5 mile oval with its 24 degree banked corners for some high speed, wheel-to-wheel action. Located in the heart of NASCAR country in Concord, North Carolina, CMS hosted what would turn out to be quite an interesting week of IndyCar racing with a combined 397 drivers taking a shot at glory. In the IndyCar Oval Fixed setup series, 244 drivers took to the track aiming to jump straight to the series lead in hopes of winning this season’s title. The sim-racer who accomplished that feat was Tim Doyle (Atlantic), who jumped to the top of the points standings with 198 points after competing in one race the strength of the field race [...]
Down Continues Where He Left Off
by Dylan Sharman on May 10th, 2013
The opening round of the iRacing.com V8 Supercar Series headed to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This would be the series’ first appearance at Laguna Seca for a few years and all the changes during Week 13 promise to make for a really interesting season of online racing. Qualifying for Round One was lead by defending series champion Madison Down with a 1:24.320 while Mitchell McLeod — now driving for 4Motorsports — would start on the front row for the first time in just over a year in the main series. Justin Ruggier and Josh Muggleton were third and fourth on the grid while Richard Hamstead and Rens Broekman occupied the third row. John Emerson and Vail Riches from TTL locked-out Row Four with Corey Slade and Brad Ryan rounded-out the [...]
Moreira Takes Surprise CTC Lead
by Katier Scott on May 10th, 2013
Fittipaldi driver Nuno Moreira opened the 2013 S2 Classic Teams Championship with an excellent performance that placed the veteran sim-racer atop the championship. Several pre-season favourites and leading runners were absent as the season opened with 136 drivers visiting the classic Northamptonshire venue of Silverstone. Running the Silverstone Historical layout 12 drivers registered race wins, with Season One champion, now running as a guest driver, Nicklas Lindqvist, taking three wins in as many starts in is Lotus 79. Two drivers registered pairs of wins, from pairs of starts with Steve Kasimatis outscoring Williams driver, James Hand by 41 points. One other driver was a double winner during the course of the week, but Jacek Madejski had to start his Hesketh five times in order to take his duo of victories. [...]
Halabi & Dolezal Lead iRNC after Season Opener
by Joe Pisciotta, Jr on May 8th, 2013
The inRacingNews Challenge multi-class series opened 2013 Season 2 at Okayama “Short” in Japan this week. iRNC regulars can agree this is probably the slickest short track on the schedule. After crowning last season’s champions just two weeks ago both the overall Solstice and Mazda champs are back to defend their titles and, after one week of online racing a new name sits atop the Solstice standings while the reigning Mazda champion continues his winning ways. Pontiac Solstice Ilham Halabi (Asia), who was a late contender last season in the Solstice championship, started-off the campaign with a huge win over Chris Hughson (New York) in the highest SOF (5696) race this week. Ilham’s mere .952 second win over Hughson earned him 252 champ points and he now sits atop the [...]
Mustangs Kickoff Strong
by Jeff Jacobs on May 8th, 2013
The most-watched pony race of the week may have taken place at Churchill Downs on Saturday, but the four-wheel variety provided a full week of excitement at Lime Rock Park, first stop for Season 2 of the iRacing.com Mustang Cup series. A great turnout of 353 different sim-drivers took their Ford Mustang FR500S to the famous Connecticut track for some of the best competition of the week. The result was a season that opened with 47 official races producing an amazing 29 different winners. Six of the 26-lap online races were decided by less than a second, with similarly close battles to be found throughout the field in every race. Vedran Broz looked to make an early statement in Season 2, taking 11 wins in 12 races during the week. [...]
Castro Ledo Early iGPS Leader
by Kenneth O'Keefe on May 8th, 2013
The iRacing.com Grand Prix Series took to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the first week of 2013 Season 2. The 2.238 mile (3.602 km) course was recently given a graphics overhaul by the iRacing team. Some drivers were a bit skeptical about the circuit choice for the schedule, feeling it was simply to show-off the updates without thought of what is best for the series. Nonetheless, drivers took to the track contending to be part of the second batch to earn their black Pro stripe in 2013. 120 drivers contended in a race session throughout the week, 101 of whom placed qualifying times. Leading the qualifiers was Ricardo Castro Ledo (France), who earned the pole position with a lap of 1:01.381 in his Williams-Toyota FW31, closely followed by Ryosuke Sawada [...]
Binder Performs Perfection At Phoenix
by Scott Kelly on May 8th, 2013
When it comes to motorsports championships, seven is a number of reverence. The king of NASCAR, Richard Petty, is known for winning seven championships. Same with the legendary Dale Earnhardt, who also won seven cup titles. The world renowned Formula One wheelman Michael Schumacher was crowned seven times, and MotoGP superstar Valentino Rossi has collected seven championship trophies as well in the 500cc class. After the conclusion of iRacing’s first season of 2013, there’s a new seven-time champion in town. Alan Binder, the king of the iRacing.com Sprint Car Series, scored his seventh straight sprint car championship on the service. While the competition near the top is fiercer than ever before, Binder will be hunting down his eight straight title this season, and will be pitted against the front runners of [...]

Season 2 of 2013 has begun in iRacing. For the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series (fixed setup), the season kicked-off with 35-lap races on the high banks of the Talladega Superspeedway. The thrill of three-wide, flat-out racing always helps populate iRacing servers, and this past week did not disappoint in terms of participation, as an astounding total of 1479 drivers came out to take a chance in the draft at NASCAR’s largest oval. High SOF Race: The high strength-of-field (SOF) race took place on the first night of the race week. Clayton Celovsky (Canada) drove his Mustang Creek Ford Fusion to victory lane in the 4183 SOF event, earning his only win of the week in the series and 267 championship points. Eric Sabol (Pennsylvania) finished second in the race, [...]
Alfalla’s Magical Week
by Jordan Hightower on May 7th, 2013
For some sim racers, navigating around The Magic Mile (New Hampshire Motor Speedway) takes a type of wizardry. Over 1,650 sim racers took the green flag for at least one race during the opening week of Season Two in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Fixed Series, and there were absolutely a fair share of those who were out to lunch as they attempted to navigate the 1.058-mile speedway in a timely fashion. For those online racers who are among the elite group, New Hampshire Motor Speedway is a really fun track to race. Packing just seven degrees of banking in the racing groove, the track provides a high speed short track racing atmosphere that places NHMS among a favorite for many sim racers. Although he has yet to grab a [...]
