Merhi ends year with win
October 23rd, 2011

Roberto Merhi ended his championship-winning F3 Euro Series campaign with a dominant 10th victory of the year.
After leading into the first corner, the polesitter was overtaken by Felix Rosenqvist at the hairpin on the opening lap, the Mucke Motorsport driver taking a wide line in and getting on the power earlier than his Prema rival to out-drag Merhi on the run towards the Arena.
Merhi, however, was in no mood to stay behind and outbraked Rosenqvist around the outside at the next corner, the Spaniard forcefully chopping across the nose of the Swede’s car as he turned in, causing Rosenqvist to lock up his front wheels and go straight on at the corner.
Rosenqvist regrouped and had a go back at Merhi at the same point on the next lap, but then spun into the tyre wall at the Nord Kurve before half-distance.
Merhi was left untroubled at the front as a result and pulled out a six-second lead over Rosenqvist’s team-mate Nigel Melker, but backed off during the closing stages and came home 1.5s clear of the Dutchman.
One of the most impressive performances was that of Merhi’s Prema team-mate Daniel Juncadella, who started eighth, but steadily picked off Signature trio Carlos Sainz Jr, Daniel Abt and Marco Wittmann to secure the final podium spot.
Wittmann, Sainz and Abt were next up; the Spaniard taking his best Euro Series finish in fifth, while Jimmy Eriksson and Gianmarco Raimondo completed the top eight for Motopark and Prema.
There was a dramatic incident on the opening lap when Facundo Regalia slewed right under braking for Turn 2 and hit Laurens Vanthoor, breaking his own front suspension and causing the Belgian to retire in the pits with a damaged car.
