Merhi: Third ideal place to start
November 19th, 2011
Roberto Merhi believes he is starting from the best place on the grid for the Macau Grand Prix after finishing third in Saturday’s qualification event.
The Spaniard moved up from eighth to third in the race – after being locked in a close fight with eventual second-placed finisher Felipe Nasr.
But although he was not able to overhaul his rival, Merhi is full of confidence about his chances of both winning the race – and being able to lead by the first corner.
“Third place is okay, because I think it is the best position for the start,” said the Prema driver. “Last year [Daniel] Abt started third and he was P1 at Lisboa, so I think it is a really good place to be.
“I didn’t push to win this race because it is not so important. It was a qualification race, it was not important to finish, second or third.
“Even for Marco [Wittmann, race winner] it was not so important. I think I am really quick and maybe the quickest, maybe not. We will see tomorrow. Everything looks right, I feel comfortable and I think tomorrow will be a good day.”
Merhi was adamant that he would not take too many risks today – despite having several attempts to overtake Nasr and the pair getting very close on lap eight.
“I think that was a bit on the limit, and he should remember it was a qualification race,” said Merhi about that moment. “He defended so much his second position. Look at Valtteri [Bottas], he finished fourth and used his brain a lot.”
