Mikkelsen impressed with Team UK trio
July 5th, 2011
Intercontinental Rally Challenge frontrunner Andreas Mikkelsen admitted he was impressed with the three Team UK rally drivers who tested his Skoda UK Fabia S2000 yesterday.
Elfyn Evans, Harry Hunt and John MacCrone all drove the car at the Goodwood rally stage in Sussex as part of an alliance between Skoda UK and the MSA, the governing body of British motorsport.
After being show the way around the 1.3-mile gravel stage by Mikkelsen, the three drove the Fabia with a Skoda UK Motorsport engineer alongside.
After looking at the data from the test, Mikkelsen said Britain’s rallying future looks rosey.
“Definitely, those three guys are good drivers,” said Mikkelsen. “You can see from the data that they’re neat and tidy in the way they drive the car, they’re not sliding it too wide or anything like that – and that’s the way cars have to be driven in the future. I was impressed and I think they were.
“It was good [for them] because they hadn’t driven a car as light or maybe as powerful as the Skoda, so it gave them a good idea of what S2000 is about. All three of them have very good potential for the future.”
Hunt said: “The car was amazing. It’s very physical to drive and there’s no rest in the stage – it was pretty hard work. Even on the straights, the car was moving about and sliding on the gravel, so there’s no downtime behind the wheel.
“I only have limited four wheel drive experience and learning the stage at the same time was a challenge, but the whole event has been a fantastic experience. We have to say a big thanks to Skoda for this opportunity.”
