Stoneman to make FR3.5 test return
November 24th, 2011
Dean Stoneman will drive a single-seater for the first time since being diagnosed with testicular cancer at next week’s Formula Renault 3.5 test at Aragon.
The 21-year-old Briton had signed for ISR to take part in this year’s championship after winning the 2010 Formula 2 title, but was sidelined after being informed of his condition last January.
His recovery now well underway, Stoneman will drive for ISR alongside European F3 Open champion Alex Fontana in Spain next week
“We are obviously delighted that Dean will return for the test with ISR,” said his manager Stephen Noakes.
“Since his operation Dean has been slowly recovering and working on his fitness and he now feels the time is now right to get back into the car and use the test as part of his rehabilitation for 2012.
“ISR have been tremendous in keeping the door open for Dean this year and we thank them for their amazing support during a very testing year.”
Among the other drivers confirmed for the test Roberto Merhi, who will drive for Comtec as part of his prize for winning the F3 Euro Series. Formula Renault Eurocup champion Robin Frijns and Nick Yelloly, a podium finisher in FR3.5, will join him.
Fortec will run Formula Renault UK champion and McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award finalist Alex Lynn alongside British F3 racer Carlos Huertas, while Carlos Sainz Jr will turn out for Carlin.
Sainz’s fellow Red-Bull back teenager Daniil Kvyat will drive for P1 while series newcomer DAMS, running its test in conjunction with Epic, will field Brazilians Felipe Nasr and Fabian Machado – the British and Sud-Am F3 champions of this year – and GP3 race-winner Adrian Quaife-Hobbs.
Two more F3 champions will also take part in the test; Sergio Campana (Italy) and Yuhi Sekiguchi (Japan) will drive for BVM Target.
